What can we learn from that cheeky little advert? Number one: Always ask if his mommy is home; and two: the role women play in the automotive market is shifting gears. Yip, we've come a long way, baby. Years ago, you would have never seen a woman in the driver's seat in a scenario like that. She would've been the one watching, teary eyed; from the balcony as the guy sped away. And you just know he'd never ball. The commercial is symbolic of just how fast and how far women have traveled down that bumpy road. My grandmother, rest her soul, would flip if she saw the way the woman in the that commercial car. In 80 years, she never once saw the world from the driver's seat of an automobile; never man-handl- V wrapped her fingers around the soft leather of a steering wheel. It wasn't the place for a 'lady', she'd tell me. Women weren't much more than drink holders and map folders in her day. Needless to say, she and the rest of the family were flabbergasted when my parents married and my dad taught my mom how to chive. No other female ;s M$X m the. family held a valid driver's licence, and the fact that my mom actually drove the family vehicle whenever and wherever she liked shocked the heck out of every last one of them - male and female alike. (Truth be told, it also ignited a bit of trend that made some of the other women in the family beg their husbands to teach them how to handle a stick shift.) The shocking part, to me, is that this was barely even 40 years ago. My sister, who is only eight years older than me, lived with a slightly different understanding of the relationship between women and wheels. Sure, women drove cars, but she still grew up watching men star in car chases on the big screen in movies like Smokey and the Bandit and on the small screen in television shows like The Dukes of Hazard. Granted, Daisy took her turn at the wheel from time to time, but most of the action shots of the General r Lee doing a 360 showed Tom Wopat's or John Schneider's handsome mugs giving it to the gas pedal. Fast forward 20 years and, just like that commercial, there's a new face staring through the windshield in movies. My niece is growing up with a new breed of action heroes: tough chicks who can give the best testosterone-fuele- d a run for their money.
