The refrain is heard throughout college football, from coaches in every corner of the country. e "We know all about Holiday," they say. "We tried to recruit him." Every one. There's another side to C Pili. This one seems to be a bit more nasty and deter-- , mined. "The responsibility I take on for myself is I con-sider it an insult any time there's a ball (carrier) that comes up the middle," said ,J3 Pili. "Anything that passes ft through the middle, 1 real-ily get down on myself. "Yeah," he said. "If we ? Bhut off the run against most teams, then we'll be a successful defense." BYU entered 2001 miss-!ing three starters from- ;g2000's defensive line. Pili is one member of BYLFs 2001 defensive line trying to replace them. BYlFa defense is allowing 166.3 rushing yards per game and 4.3 yards per I carry. In 2000, it gave up 122.4 per game and 3.3 per carry. But these numbers 'might be a little misleading. Being bo far ahead in each "of its first three games has enabled BYU to employ defenses, especially down the stretch when opponents have posted meaningless Bcores. So far, coach Gary Crowton is pleased with how Pili and others are playing. "(Pili) is playing good," Crowton said, "fro hurt his 'knee in camp and played with it a little bit banged up. but he was able to play. It's pretty healed up right now. Or is it? This victory Miami's 12th in its last 13 meetings with Pittsburgh came just as fast and just as furious during a first quarter, with Portis scoring twice and Dorsey throwing TD pass to an Andre Johnson on a fade pattern one play after a Pitt fumble. Portis, constantly eluding defenders with his cutback running, ran for 131 yards on 24 carries, with touchdown runs of 1 and 4 yards. Dorsey failed to throw for 300 yards for the first time in three games and missed a few open receivers, but still was for 223 yards and a touchdown. 20-poi- nt Clinton Portis scored on three short runs set up by Ken Dorsey's precision passing and Miami, showing no rust from a nearly three-wee-k layoff, came out with its accustomed flurry to beat Pittsburgh Thursday night. Miami's second trip to Pennsylvania in less than a month ended just as its first, when an overwhelmed Penn State couldn't keep up with the Hurricanes' speed and size in a 33-- victory Sept. 1. "He's a very intelligent young man who doesn't need me to tell him what to do." And that, perhaps, is what people don't know about the Notre Dame sophomore quarterback. But apparently the pain got to be too much because he left practice early Thursday to have it pulled. He said he'll still play Saturday at aM UNLV. Pili wants to lose a little weight and get down to around 310, at which he played as a freshman in 1998 before leaving on a mission. An impacted wisdom tooth might have helped that cause. Then there's the issue of his wedding. Originally scheduled for Nov. 21, BYXTs scheduling changes and other concerns have prompted him to move it to next Tuesday. But his biggest concern right now is stopping UNLV on Saturday. Pili suffered a sprained knee in BYLTs first scrimmage in August. He will play without a brace on it Saturday for the first time this season. He expects to be a little quicker. So maybe, finally, Pili (four tackles, one for a loss, in 2000) will get his first sack of the season? "If Denney and Keisel don't take them all," Pili joked. Pili said some blockers d him have this season. He tries to split the blockers and fight through. With Keisel and Denney causing problems at the ends, it's hard for opponents to commit too many blockers to the center of the field, so it could be worse on vs. FRIDAY Sept. 28 r.'GW Vx Umio 7pm AND pictures MTU DM Sept. 2D us.
