May 17.2001 FISHING FOR A GOOD TIME FISHINGREFORT - - Ice is off Ail roads are STRAWBERRY RESERVOIR free of snow.. .including the road to Renegade. Fishing is good all around, particularly in the mornings and early PAYSON LAKES Lakes are scheduled to be stocked in about a week from now. evening hours. Float tubers are reporting good success usmg dart wooly buggers. Shore anglers are reporting mostly fan to good success by using powerbaits or worms. Some bo.it anglers are casting rapalas. bait tipped tube jigs and other lures toward the shoreline and having fair to good success. Trol'mg with leech patterns or pop gear has been effective as well. Remember the limit is four trout. Only one can be over 18 inches. Please do your part to ensure the future of this heavily utilized fishery by voluntarily releasing fish! Do not fillet fish until you are home and ready to cook them. The fishing for cutthroat trout is good but BEAR LAKE can be spotty. Some fishermen are reporting very good catches and others are doing just fair. The tnck to catching fish at this time of the year is to be willing to move around and try different locations until you find fish. Once you catch a fish, stick with the same method, depth, and gear that you were using and you should have some great fishing. Some fishermen are doing well trolling rapalas and flatfeet deep. fish along the east side, in shallow water 10-2- 5 From First Point northward to Cisco Beach is the area that has seen the most fishing pressure. Also try trolling from the Utah State Park marina northward to Swan Creek. Dark colors seem to be producing the best results. Some fish are also being taken in deeper depths using downriggers or lead-cor- e line. Try fishing close to the bottom or for fish suspended in the water. Some fishermen are also jigging with feet deep, tube jigs tipped with Cisco meat, in water 20-4- 0 and doing fairly well for both cutthroat and lake trout. Shore fishing for cutthroat trout off the Utah State Park marina has remained fair. Best luck has come by casting deep diving crank baits or spoons and retrieving them slowly. Access is available to boat ramps around the lake. DEER CREEK RESERVOIR - Seeing more people fish- ing this water now that the weather is warm. Many of them are fishing after work for the evening action. Fishing success is fair to good from boat by using pop gear and a worm in the early morning. Anglers report various preferences for best baits from shore ... most are using either powerbaits or a nightcrawlermarshmallow combination. Remember regulations of: Trout limit four. Walleye limit is six but only one can be over 20 inches. Bass limit six. All bass over 12 inches must be immediately released. Yellow perch limit is 10. JORDANELLE RESERVOIR - Boaters are still tures in the reservoir. Shore anglers are still reporting fair and sometimes good success and most are using power baits or crawlers and marshmallows. The State Park ranger advises shore anglers to fish near the rocky shoreline for best trout success. Please remember regulation of only four trout. Bass limit is six. All bass over 12 inches must be immediately released. Do your part to prevent the spread of whirling disease by cleaning mud from waders and equipment. Do not transport any parts of fish caught here to other waters. - Both fishing success and the SCOFIELD RESERVOIR weather were poor last weekend. DWR Southeastern Region Aquatics Manager Louis Berg encourages anglers to walk to areas that haven't received as much fishing pressure, while avoiding posted private property. Anglers are reminded that all tributaries will remain closed until July 14. The brown or olive bugger with a marabou tail has been a good fly pattern. Bait anglers continue to use powerbait, nightcrawlers, and salmon eggs. Release of trout is encouraged. A four trout limit is in place at the reservoir. RESERVOIR success. Walleye and brown trout most likely to be taken. Anglers catching fish mostly on crayfish imitations, drop them down and fish the bottom. Walleye also seem to like the color "chartreuse" this spring. - Good rainbow trout fishing using small lures or suspending a nightcrawler 3- - to under a bobber. Good areas for shore fishing include Cart Creek, Dam Visitor Center, Mustang, Sheep Creek and Antelope. Fair to good lake trout fishing. Concentrate at 50-9foot depths using jigs on the bottom; or troll flatfish, rapalas or a flashersquid combo behind a downrigger or 0 on the bottom with steel line. Another good technique is a flatfish, rapala or rattle lure on monofiliment in shallower water. This technique is best in early morning or late evening. - The DWR is having some probYUBA RESERVOIR lems with violations at Yuba. Please remember that the walleye limit is six, but only one over 20 inches. Light fishing pressure. Success for both perch and walleye has been reported as "fair." The Yuba State Park phone number is (435) 758-261LAKE POWELL - Warm weather has returned. This warm spell has started snowmelt runoff which will increase lake) level, turbidity and stimulate plankton growth. Warm calm weather means that stripers will soon spawn and then move away from places they have been caught all spring. Bass have spawned again. Conditions are prime for good fishing. ' X Artificial flies and lures only! PROVO RIVER (upper) Notice: Temporary closure of public access to the middle Provo River from Highway 40 to River Road effective March 19 through May 25 due to construction activities on restoring this stretch of river. Most of the anglers that were cond tacted this week were still using sow bugs, midges or hares ear, in sizes 16-2Only two brown trout under 15 inches may be kept. All rainbows and cutthroats must be immediately released. Do your part to prevent the spread of whirling disease by cleaning mud from waders and equipment. Do not transport any parts of fish caught here to other waters. DN l.UNI)The THE DAILY Good HERALD fishing using spinners or powerbaits. Striped bass are found in smaller groups but in many more locations with decreasing catches coming from lower lake) staging areas. The dam and power plant are still steady fish per boat for a day of with average catch being 10-2fishing. Schools are moving along the walls and can be found anywhere in the main channel or long canyons between Wahweap and Hite. Shad have not spawned yet and are not abundant. Look for striped bass near main channel points with broken rubble rock where they can forage for crayfish. Steep cliffs offer no reason for striper schools to stop moving until they come to a spot that might provide food. Fish points, ledges and isolated rough areas in smooth textured terrain. Chumming five finely chopped anchovies at each spot will get stripers started if they are present. Drifting anchovies or water in the backs of canyons (30-4- 0 trolling in feet) is another good way to locate a shallow feeding school. Four tagged stripers have been turned in during the million dollar fish contest which runs until May 24. They were caught at the power plant intake, Navajo Canyon, upper San Juan and mouth of Halls Creek. Smallmouth bass have spawned again. The first two spawns involved larger individuals. Younger, shorter fish have built new nests near spots that larger fish have used for the past two weeks. Look for soil on slick rock ledges. Bass fan away soil until only the rock is left. Then they build the nest. Virtually any area that provides pebble size broken rock is now occupied by smallmouth bass. All broken rock habitats are now working for smallmouth submerged reefs, boulder rock, any rock slide on the edge adjoining the cliff face, rocky coves and cuts and slots in canyons. hesitate to say they are behind every rock but that's pretty close. Smallmouth are so abundant that we recommend keeping a limit of six fish to reduce numbers and allow those that are left to grow to a larger size. Walleye, catfish, bluegill and some other species are becoming more active in the warming water. Fish deep smallmouth structure for walleye. Sunfish will be caught right along side shallow smallmouth and bluegill will be in brush or on deep boulder habitat on long points, particularly uplake (Good Hope Bay). Don't be surprised to have a catfish hit your plastic grub in shallow turbid water in the back of a cove. - HOBBLE CREEK & DIAMOND FORK RIVERS Good fishing ... especially early in the morning. Hobble Creek Catch basin has been stocked again this week. Diamond Fork not stocked. Good fishing on both livers. Water level is still low and clear. Remember that on Diamond Fork from Springville Crossing to its headwaters is "artificial flies and lures only" and it is closed to the possession of cutthroat trout. All other trout species limit is eight Access to parts of Diamond Fork will be a little difficult from Monks Hollow to Three Forks due to a three year construction project.
