Born in in 1843 into a wealthy American family, James split his youth between Europe and the U.S., and tried a brief fling at Harvard Law School before deciding to take up the pen. In the end, he spent most of his adult Today, one might say life in Europe and eventually became a British subject in 1915, just a year before his death. But, like Ireland's James Joyce, who built his literary career on writing about the Dublin he abandoned permanently for Europe at the age of 20, James took his America and his ideas about his birthplace to the hallowed halls of the Old World and the Old World suffered by comparison. On Jan. 3 at 9 p.m. ET, PBS" "Masterpiece Theatre's American Collection" presents its second dramatization of an American literary work, James' "The American," published in 1877. It is the third, and considered by many to be the best, of the author's earlier works (other James novels previously dramatized for the screen include "The Turn of the Screw," "The Wings of the Dove" and The Portrait -- of a Lady"). Like many of James' novels, it contrasts the naive, trusting nature and natural virtue of Americans with the more jaded, sophisticated and decadent Europeans. Filmed in Dublin, which doubles for Paris, "The American" stars Matthew Modine ("Any Given Sunday," "What the Deaf Man Heard") in the title role of Christopher Newe millionaire who man, a heads to Paris in search of cultural refinement and an aristocratic wife. Despite being surrounded by beauties - including a free thinking artist - Newman sets his sights on Claire de Cintre (Aisling O'Sullivan), the widowed daughter of the ancient and aristocratic de Bellegarde family. Armed with the determination and daring that won him a couple of fortunes, Newman pursues the elusive Claire, over the objections of her family. His strongest opposition comes from her fiercely protective mother, the Marquise de Bellegarde, played by veteran British actress (and "Mystery!" host) Diana Rigg, whose dark family secret Newman eventually threatens to expose. Of course, we cant look for that from others. We must, ultimately, find that in ourselves." Why does he think that Newman is so irresistibly drawn to Claire? "Perhaps because she seemed broken, or trapped. I think he saw something of himself in her. If he could help her, free her, then he might have been able to do the same for himself " Rigg, who dons immense, rustling black dresses and waterfalls of inky lace to play the formidable Marquise, has her own opinions of Newman's pursuit. "Obviously, he was a man who liked a challenge," she says, "or he wouldn't have made his money in the fashion he did. I think she, presented a challenge. He recognized the tragedy in her life hitherto. "Her beauty, he was very deeply attracted to that He sensed there was a passion there that had never been able to express itself Possibly, in a sense, the hero in him emerged. A great deal of the story of "The American" rests on the differences between notions of class and family obligation in the United States and Europe. Newman fails to recognize the invisible but iron chains that surround Claire and her family. "Being an American," says Modine, a California native, "I don't know what it's like to grow up in an environment of social class. I feel we base pur opinions of each other on what we are able to accomplish and our behavior towards each other. "We have no entitlements because of our "birthrights' here. Our war for independence was fought to free us of the tyranny of birthrights. That said, I feel many Americans still feel romantically toward royalty and all its histo-ry." Rigg brought a different perspective. her because we have a kind of social structure in England," she says. "It's not as rigid as it is portrayed in The American,' but I think it helps, being English, playing that sort of part, because of that. You Americans never had an aristocracy that dates back into the mists of time." "I don't believe in what I had to portray. But I had to believe in her belief, the fact that she, within her own marriage, had never experienced love of any kind at all and was perfectly prepared to visit that kind of situation on her daughter, in order to keep the name and the status." Does Rigg have sympathy for her character? There is something in her background that makes her the way she is, and hopefully the audience will sense that as well. But I didn't play her for sympathy. It would have been pointless to do that, because she never would have done. She would never compromise herself in order to gain sympathy from anybody." Does she have a spine of steel? Rigg laughs. "No, corset of steel!" Modine describes The American" as one of James' "tragic love stories." What does he think it has to say for modern audiences? "I guess," he says, "things haven't changed much. People still fall in love and have a hard time with it. That when you fall in love, the families of your loved one are often hard to deal with; that being and falling in love can be a real pain in the arse." |
