Show Pace 16 THE HERALD, Provo. Utah. Thursday. April 28. 1984 Candidates Richard Maxfield Files for L J Re-Electi- on Rep. Richard L. Maxfield, has filed for for his position in the Utah House of Representatives. Maxfield has served two previous terms in the House and says he will postpone an assignment that would have taken him out of the country for 18 months. He is Education must be properly funded, but increased taxation is not the only answer, according to Maxfield. The business part of operating a school district takes a good share of the education dollar, he said. We should expect and insist that it be run efficiently, he said. The money is not going to the teachers or for smaller classes, he said, but for the high salaries of the administrators and perso-ne- l in the state school office. "I have tried to represent my constituents as I would want my legislator to represent me. Their interests have been foremost in all I have done, and if they see fit to me, I will try to so serve them in the future," said Maxfield. He and his wife Joyce, are the re-ele- ct mm noii - Lindon Police Chief Leon Laws submitted his resigna- tion Monday, leaving that small community with only three policemen to provide security. Formal announcement came at a Lindon meeting Tuesday, and no successor has been named. Lindon Mayor Kenneth McMillan met with Pleasant Grove and Orem City officials to attempt a contract that would provide police, fire and emergency medical parents of six grown children and grandchildren. Maxfield was raised in Provo and is a graduate of Provo High, Brigham Young University and Northwestern Law School at Chicago. Maxfield began practicing law in Provo in 1951 and has recently partially retired so that he could more effectively serve in the legislature, he said. During World War II Maxfield in served as a navigator on the Pacific and was recalled for service during the Korean War where he flew 46 mission over North Korea. He was elected Wasatch County Attorney, and withdrew prior to to take his family to the Dominican Republic where he served as Associate Director of the Peace Corps for that country, and was there when President Lyndon Johnson sent American troops to the island because of a revolution. He was the last District Attorney for the Sixth District which covered Utah County and the five counties to the east. 13 at Vineyard Elementary placed fourth at the Utah State Spelling Bee recently. Warner of Spanish Fork has filed for the office of State Representative for District 66. District 66 includes the Spanish Fork, Mapleton and Southwest Provo area. Warner, a professor of educa- re Wot - - V running again to assist in the fight to "stop the excessive and uncalled for utility rate increases that have recently been granted by the Public Service Commission," he said. During his years in office, Maxfield has been an outspoken critic of special interest legislation. He has worked to expose what he says is the waste and inefficiency in all levels of state government and to reduce spending. Maxfield explained that when last year's flooding made it necessary for additional revenue, he supported the temporary sales tax increase, but only with a provision it would terminate after one year. In the recent Budget Session, because of , that commitment, he voted against making the tax increase permanent, he said.
