"If you want to know the truth, ask a young child. You'll find out the truth." In spite of her tailored clothes and Carefully coifed hair, Marie Andrew looks like she'd rather take you on in a quick game of basketball than hand you a plate of cookies. And when you find out she's been working in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints Primary organization for half a century, you'd never guess she started when she was 30. As far as the Primary goes, Mrs, Andrew has done it all. She was a three time Primary president, a three time counselor in the presidency, and has taught every age' group. She began her service 50 years ago in Spring City and has been continuously involved ever since. what does she enjoy most? "What I'm doing now working with the five year olds," she says. "They're such sweet children, just coming away from their mothers. I'm just their second mother." Mrs. 'Andrew had only two children of her own, but says she "could ; take everybody else's. JANNEY Herald Staff Writer Page She says she has neighborhood children visiting all the time and she loves it. Recently her LDS Ward paid her a special tribute for her years of service in the Primary, but her own children were unable to attend. After the service she said she came home to an empty house, but within a few minutes the kids from across the street were over to visit. "They just knew I'd be feeling lonely," she said. "I have all the children come visit me. There's something about children I just love." She says one of the most satisfying things about working with Primary children is seeing what happens when they grow up. "It's quite a satisfaction to see so many of the boys and girls I've taught grow up and go on missions," she says. "I try to go the extra mile to keep them active in the Church. The mothers tell me I've helped their children in a lot of ways." "I sit and watch the deacons pass the sacrament, and wonder if I did something for them." "People around here think I'm crazy being in the Primary so long," she says. "But the Primary has been my life. It still is." 'mm is k mm mm LARGE END SAVE 4BEEP 38sC Wlt RIB U JVh lb. OZ. She shares, some of her secrets with other teachers of young children: "I always5 try to visit the homes before they come into my class so I can know what kinds of families they come from. That's the problem with schools now. Teachers don't know the parents, especially the mothers. "The first three lessons each year are on; reverence in the Lord's house. After that, I have no problems. I'm a strict teacher, but 50 ' ; they know I love them. They just have to be reverent in my class. "We don't have just a lesson every week. We have little talks, little parties. The children come to my home and tell me all their problems. I try to be like a second mother to them. "We have activities in class, too. I have bean bags, balls, a box of toys. When I notice their attention wandering we take a break and play for five or ten minutes. You can't keep quiet the whole time. Until they're about eight years old you have to give them recreation. five-year-ol- "I see some of the younger teachers who have a lot of problems. If they could sit back and see a different way of handling children, maybe they wouldn't have the problems. "You have to study children. I think there are a lot of Primary teachers who talk over their heads. You've got to come down to their level and tell them stories they can understand. "But never use baby talk. I not even with my never do that own children. That's definitely out. You use simpler words, but not baby talk. C "The mother and the father have to set an example for the children. If the mother and father don't go to Church, you can't expect the children to. You can't just send them to Church. If you get ready and go with the children, they'll go too, and they'll ill P GftVE like it. "I would like to have these e' kids.. Their teachers call them I'd be interested to see what I could do wih them. "I just go in there with love. That's the secret of teaching love." 1 17 ) hard-to-handl- e. mm wet HEADS FOR Host Assemblies Jehovah's Witnesses in Utah announced plans to host five Bible n assemblies in Salt Lake area during the 1984 calendar year, the largest projecting an attendance of 10,000 members. "These conventions in 1 combination with our house to house minis- try have over the years played a large role in making fundamental Bible truths known, many of which have not been taught by other religions. The factual proof of this was publically demonstrated at a Watchtower Convention at Columbus, Ohio in 1931. Since that time both public awareness of the name and its current restoration to the Biblical text in many modern translations has resulted due to Witness activity in exalting God's name. Current plans call for each of Utah's two circuits (a geographical designation incorporating 20 congregations) to host two circuit assemblies with attendance anticipated near 2000 for each gathering. In addition, Ogden has been selected as one of over 100 sites for a larger District Convention. The Ogden gathering will draw 10,000 attendants from five circuits located in Utah, Idaho and Nevada.
