Today a new generation of is creating tag worlds of wonder in the Disney , theme parks. While the first-han- d . motion picture experience is not , s" ever-expan- as prevalent, today's "irnagi-- ' neers" have the benefit of learn-- . ing from their forerunners, so skills of the moviemaker are still -- work. .at When " ' they tackled the challenge of creating a new Fantasyland at Disneyland, a job which was completed at a price tag of $41 million, the "imagineers" had 4,:a number of new tools at their V disposal, especially in the area of ; - special effects and ride design. . But the main task at hand still involved creating extremely con-;- " 'densed versions of fairytale and ;' motion picture classics in taree--v dimensional form. "Snow White and the Seven ' ly ; Dwarfs," "Pinocchio," "Peter . ' Pan," and "The Adventures of lchabod and Mr. Toad" are four Disney animated features which inspired Fantasyland ride-throu- 'adventures. "We began by studying the films and mapping out the emotions involved in the stories," explains Tony Baxter, one of the show designers. "Each story has a particular theme: Pinocchio is a moralistic fable, Peter Pan's mood is fantastic and beautiful, Snow Shiw is pretty scary and Mr. Toad is madcap, cacophonous fun." The stories are told in approximately ten scenes and in two to three minutes. In creating the versions of animation drawings, WED designers took special care to be as true to original scenes as possible, in some cases, creating exact duplicates. In "Pinocchio's Daring Jourthree-dimension- al ney," designers wanted Gep-petto- 's Toy Shoppe to be an exact of the original scene in the film. To achieve that, dozens d in of clocks had to be hand-crafte- painstaking detail. "We even had the carpenters hand-carv- the wooden bolts e hold the clocks on the wall," Lescault said. In "Peter Pan's Flight," the children's bedroom is a copy of the film in every detail. A team of d each piece carpenters of furniture, duplicating the proportions exactly, and painters d every stripe on the well as the detailed as wallpaper pattern on the rug. "To make Never Land as recognizable as possible, we have the guests seeing the island from precisely the same point of view as in the film," Lescault says. And in which hand-carve- hand-painte- the next scene, she explains, guests discover an exact replica of Captain Hook's pirate ship. Even the names of the crew members teW "The special effects provide the animation and enhance the fantasy," says Bill Novey who headed the team of 55 "illusioneers," who developed new applications for technology used to create the "magic" in the Fantasyland attractions. f f T? 1Sn ft " - i fj state-of-the-a- rt r "In Peter Pan we created a Never Land fantastical feeling is literally alive with movement: rippling waves caress the shores, stars twinkle overhead, waterfalls flow with color, Indian campfires emit smoke and so do the cannon explosions and the volcano," ytV Novey says. In contrast, the mood of Snow White is scary. "The animated fog effect in the forest through which the guests follow Snow White not only works as an important visual element, but it also involves the guests physically through their sense of touch so that the atmosphere created is unmistakably eerie," he says. "We wanted Geppetto's Arts Q FABULOUS FARES didn't want one. But when they went back to look at the drawing from the motion picture, they discovered there was a tree in the scene just outside the cottage in the same place the beam would be in the ride, so the scene turned out even more authentic than they had originally planned. "In 'Mr. Toad's Wild Ride' we didn't try to tell the whole story," says Baxter. "We just immersed the guests in the mood of the film and let them have fun." Opening in the spring of 1984 will be a new "Alice in Wonderland" attraction which will take guests through a fantastic, Wonderland. three-dimension-al SLC LONDON - TRAVEL EXPRESS Had enough of the snow and cold?
