Show Page HERALD, Provo, Utah. THE Monday, November 19, 1979 Provo Police Chief Gives Drivers Some Tips With Thanksgiving travel on many motorists' minds these days, Provo Chief of Police Swen C. Nielsen offers the following suggestions based on recommendations from the International Association of Chiefs of Police: As fee driver, be ready for your trip. Be rested and alert when you start; plan rest stops along the way. Plan your route in advance, keeping in mind the availability of fuel and hours of service station operations. Keep your timetable flexible in case the weather turns ugly. Thanksgiving trips often coincide with the first winter storms. Keep a check on weather and road reports. Driving in the face of severe storm and road conditions could invite an experience for which you might find it hard to be thankful! Have safety equipment checked by a competent mechanic before the trip brakes, lights, tires, defroster, windshield wipers and washer, battery and exhaust system. Safety gear in your trunk should include tire chains, booster cables, a shovel, tow chain or strap, traction mats, sand or rock salt, and emergency lighting equipment. Another good idea: a roll of paper towels for cleaning lights and glass. "Whenever, wherever you travel no matter how long or short the trip using the safety restraints in your car is never out of season!" Chief Nielsen The U.S. Postal Service has announced the designs of a pair of international airmail stamps honoring Wiley Post to be issued Nov. 20 at Oklahoma City, Okla. The stamps honor the aviation pioneer who became 25-ce- famous for record-makitiflights, scientific research and design of a pressure suit and helmet for flights. The first day of issue ceremony for the stamps will be held at 11 a.m. at the Wiley Post Memorial Building, formerly called the Oklahoma Historical Society Museum. The stamps are the third issue in a Pioneer Aviation Series of international airmail stamps which began with the Wright Brothers issue in 1978, and continued with the Octave Chanute issue of 1979. Artist Ken Dallison of Long Island, N.Y., designer of the Post stamps, also designed the Wright Brothers and the Chanute stamps. Dallison specializes in portraying man's achievements with machinery in drawings featuring both people and the machines with which they are associated. He followed this style in his approach to all three Pioneer Aviation issues. Post was often called a "natural" pilot. As one of his early flight students said, "He didn't just fly an airplane, he put it en," However, before becoming a famous flier, Post had to overcome serious financial and physical handicaps. He was born Nov. 22, 1898, in Grand Saline, Tex., and moved with his family to southwestern high-altitu- newly-designat- concluded. nt LDS Plans Conferences In Mississippi, California The First Presidency of the LDS Church has announced plans for area conferences next spring in Jackson, Miss., and Pasadena, Calif. Forum Blasts Marriott for Iran Remarks William E. Evenson of the Utah forum, a statewide Democratic discussion group, has taken exception to Utah Congressman n Dan Marriott's comments about the situation. . "The UUh Forum," said Evenson, "joins responsible people everywhere in urging restraint and support for President Carter in the frustrating problem of the American hostages in Iran. Evenson called on Marriott to retract his "inflammatory remarks urging a military solution to the Iranian crisis." "If 10,000 Iranians die in the process, that's tough," Evenson quoted Marriott as having said. Evenson responded, "The people of Utah understand that 'an eye for an eye' is contrary to higher morality. 10,000 Iranians for 60 Americans is not only 'eye for an eye' morality, it is racist. "The current hostage problem is a delicate, unfortunate situation.
