Show Monday, November 19. 1979, THE HERALD, Provo. First Presidency Lauds Family Week First Presidency of The IDS Church has issued the following statement concerning National Family Week: "We are pieased that the President and the Congress have seen fit to proclaim Nov. 18 through 24 as National Family Week in the United States. We commend and uphold them in this action. "In an era when the undermining of the home and family seems to be on the increase, it is fitting that we pause to consider ways and means to strengthen this most basic institution. "It is also appropriate that National Family Week coincides with the week in which Thanksgiving Day occurs. Thanksgiving is a time for families to be together; to express love and gratitude to the Lord and to each other for a multitude of blessings; to enjoy one another's associations, and to strengthen the bonds that hold them together. "The home is the most effective place for children to learn life's valuable lessons of truth, honor, virtue l. and It is in the home that parents can begin teaching the value of education, of honest work and of the purpose and privilege of life. "It has often been said, and we concur, that the family is the keystone of any culture or society. When family solidarity is the rule, then peace and good will generally prevail. When immorality, contention and other elements thrive, then human suffering and misery are naturally the results. "An uplifting song we enjoy begins, 'There is beauty all around when there's love at home.' We hasten to add that when there is love at home, there is a greater likelihood that there will be love in the neighborhood, in the community, and, ultimately, in the world. "It is our prayer and desire that the people of the United States and the world will turn their thoughts and actions toward strengthening home and families, not only during National Family Week but throughout the years to come." The statement was issued by Church President Spencer W. Kimball, N. Eldon Tanner, first counselor, and President Marion G. Romney, second counselor. But when director Frank Capra was introduced to a 70s Brigham Young University audience, the concert hall crowd stood and applauded. Capra was at BYU to be honored during the school's Frank Capra Festival this past week. The director attended viewings of his films, answered questions at the noon assembly in the Harris Fine Arts Center and even left his handprint in cement st the Osmond Studios, said Eric Fielding, theater professor at the Y. near-capaci- Perhaps Capra's prominence on the college consciousness - his warm reception at BYU was no isolated event - can be described as a sign of the times. The crises and scandals of the '70s, like the demands of the Depression and World War II years, make people wish for happy endings. And Capra is a master optimist. "Someone should keep reminding Mr. Average that he was bora ' divine, strong; by fate, society cr nell itself; and that he is a child of God, equal heir to all the bounties of God," Capra said in his autobiography entitled "Frank Capra: The Name Above the Title." "Goodness is riches, kindness is power and freedom is glory," he said. "Above all, every man is bor n with an inner capacity to take him as far as his imagination can dream or envision..." Recently honored at the U.S. Utah Film Festival, Capra's life story would make Horatio Alger proud. "The rest of the family thought I was nuts." Working his way through school, he eventually earned a technical degree from a local college. But he wanted something else, so he started working at film lots, eventually rising to be a director at Columbia Pictures. :iOne time I took my mother to see a preview of 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.' After the viewing 1 asked her, 'What do you think?' " Capra said. "She replied, 'It was nice. But, Frankie, when are you going to get a job?' " To aspiring directors, Capra gave some advice. "The number one job of a director is to keep the growth between scenes in his mind." he said. "The problem is with the nonsequential nature of shooting films. We'll shoot scene 107, then scene 2, then number 599. "Different directors handle the process in different ways," he said. Capra handles it by taking it home "to sleep on it," he said, while other directors will play the piano for hours on end or go for long walks and smoke a cigar while they sort things out "It all looks pretty silly to those looking on," he said. "What he is doing is fitting that scene together he is seeing that thing as a whole." "When you see a film that flows, that is proof." said Capra, "that the director handled it well " Naturally the question comes up: What does Capra think of the movies of the '70s? - f' " ....
