New staff pathologist Paul M. Urie, M.D., Ph.D., analyzed tissue from a subcutaneous tumor in a patient's neck with an electron microscope at July 28, diagnostic 1983 Brigham Young University. In this first examination, the electron microscope identified the type of cells in the tumor, allowing a more accurate diagnosis of its benign nature. Previously, a tissue specimen such as this would have been sent to a larger Salt Lake City hospital for conclusive identification. With magnification 200 times greater than that of a conventional light microscope, the electron microscope makes visible the fine structure of cells. The final image is created by streams of electrons passing through the specimen, magnified by an electromagnetic lens, and projected onto a fluores Still Hovering - cent screen, where it is then photographed for further inspec- tion. Electron microscopy will supplement routine tissue analysis by light microscopy at UVH. It will be particularly valuable to Dr. Urie in analyzing the results of endomyocardial biopsies, the excision of living heart tissue through a catheter. With such biopsies, Dr. Urie can use the electron microscope to diagnose heart disease and monitor heart damage in cancer chemotherapy. He is one of few physicians in the country trained in these procedures. A native of Provo, Dr. Urie graduated from Brigham Young University in Physics and went on to earn both an M.D. in Pathology and a Ph D, in Biophysics from the University of Utah. After serving a residency at the University of Utah Medical Center, he attended Stanford University with a fellowship in Cardiac and Surgical Pathology. Considering we've been in operation for such a short time, those are very good statistics. Our repeat business has been very good." "The base of our business is continually getting stronger," said Ellison. "We're seeing more activity everyday, particularly from the associations and convention markets.
