PLOTHOW Assistant Sports Editor - PLEASANT GROVE "I've had it with coaching. I can't take this any more. I swear. This is my last year as a coach. And you can print that." The man behind the words was West head coach Gean Plaga. He was attempting to maintain a calm exterior to hide the caldron inside. Then, he turned to a West administrator and said, "You're going to have to find a new football coach next year. I'm serious." West had just defeated Pleasant Grove 6 Friday evening in overtime. But Plaga had been involved in the game's most bizarre sequence that nearly cost the Panthers the game. After dueling to a tie in regulation time, the teams had taken a break and then West got the ball on the 10 yard line with four chances to score. West Outlasts Vikings in OT By ROGER D. PLOTHOW Assistant Sports Editor it was," said Pleasant Grove - PLEASANT GROVE It was only fitting that this game was decided by a quarterback sack. West's defensive line had bullied Pleasant Grove's offensive front all game, sacking Viking quarterback Eric Thomas seven times. And when the game was on the defensive end line, Howard Terry crashed through again to dump Thomas as he rolled out on a conversion attempt that would have given Pleasant Grove an 7 overtime victory. But the Panthers probably should have gone home 21-- 0 losers. Pleasant Grove penetrated inside the West 10 yard line four times, three times in the first half alone. But the Vikes couldn't push it across, even with a second and goal at the Panther one late in the first quarter. "Loss of intensity. That's what 185-pou- two-poi- 8-- coach Doug Bluth. West went without a first down in the first half and had only three all game. And while the Vikings dominated the play and the statistics, their inability to score when near the goal line was the difference. The game was decided in overtime, when Panther quarterback Jed Austin connected on second and goal from the seven yard line with split end Mark Gisse-maWith the PAT, West led and Pleasant Grove found itself backed against a formidable brick wall. The Vikes had been called for unsportsmanlike conduct on the previous touchdown play, and mark-of- f the set the ball on the 25 yard line. A Panther n. 7-- 0, interception seemingly ended the game on first down, but a West penalty for too many men on the field gave the Vikes another shot. Suddenly, flags were flying all over the field. West coach Gean (See related story on this page.) Plaga was yelling at the officials, was eventually whistled for four consecutive unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, and was ejected from the game. The penalties moved the ball to the one yard line, and Pleasant Grove scored on the next play, with Corby Morris going in standing up. Enter Terry, who swept through the Viking offense line as Thomas rolled to his right on the two-poiconversion attempt. Thomas didn't have a chance. Terry wrapped him up just as Thomas looked into the end zone for a receiver, and West had eaked out a 6 overtime win. 0-- 0 two-minu- "I'm very encouraged. We class team and gave them all they could handle," said Bluth. "This game was a crash course in maturity." Thomas showed potential in running Pleasant Grove's offense, which would have gained 100 yards on the ground had it not been for the yardage lost in quarterback sacks. Thomas threw for 120 yards as well, hitting on nine of 16 passes. Most encouraging to Bluth was a gutsy defense, which gave up took a point-afte- West 0 0 PI. Grove 0 0 0 7- 0 0 0 6- -- series. Orem 35, Payson 0 By DOROTHY KNOELL Herald Sports Writer A sparkling defensive performance matched by good offensive play with some "kick" gave the Orem Tigers an easy 38-- 0 win over the Payson Lions at the Orem High football field Friday. But the biggest blow to Payson's offense wasn't struck by the swarming Tiger defenders'. The Lions lost senior quarterback Rick Worthen, who was slated to start, before they even suited up. Worthen developed knee problems last week and was unable to play. "Obviously, it hurt them to be without Worthen," said Orem coach Steve Downey. "I understand he may have to have surgery and be out four or five weeks. It was a big blow to them." The stingy Orem defense allowed the Lions a meager 60 yards total offense. Payson penetrated Orem territory only once. On offense, Gammell run the of Tiger option offense well, showing first-gam- e poise. Fumble-itu- s was a bit of a problem, with Orem coughing it up five times. "I think we executed really well, considering it's the first game. If it was the fourth or fifth game of the season, I wouldn't be that happy," Downey said. "We made a couple of offensive adjustments during the game and the kids picked up on them and executed them. I thought Gammell read the option really well. It's a very difficult offense, but he did very well." on his Gammell was first two passes of the game, but came back to hit his last five in a row, including two touchdowns. "I think we ran things pretty good. There were a few problems, but we're working on them," Gammell said. The Tigers got all the points they needed late in the first quarter. After fumbling away two opportunities deep in Lion territory, Tiger kicking specialist Lane Herrick booted a field goal to put Orem on top for good. West won the game anyway when the Panthers sacked quarterback Eric Thomas on the two-poiconversion try, but Plaga wasn't around to see it.
