The pair pled guilty to taking up to $700,000 in rare coins and foreign currency in January 1982 from safety deposit boxes owned by Salt Lake City coin dealer Norman Schultz. The boxes were in First Security State Bank and Zions First National Bank in Salt Lake City. A warrant was issued for their arrest shortly after the coins and currency were discovered missing and the Falzones eluded authorities until their arrest by federal agents in Syracuse. According to the complaint, the Falzones somehow obtained the keys to Schultz's safety deposit boxes and removed the valuable coins and currency during several trips to the banks. ar WARSAW. Poland !TPn Seven U.S. congressmen arrived in Poland Wednesday as the second American group within a week to meet with members of the communist leadership on rescheduling Poland's massive debt and lifting trade sanctions. Rep. Clarence Long, the senior member of the delegation, said Poland's $25 billion debt to the West was one of the chief topics to be discussed. Polish officials were also expected to press their argument that the West's trade sanctions, set after martial law was imposed in December 1981, have punished the country too severely. "We're very concerned about the sizeable debt," Long said, noting that Poland's tangled finances would have to be straightened out "in order to have a normal relationship" again with the United States. "We are naturally, of course, also concerned about the freedom of the Polish people," he added. Polish officials have called on the United States to lift the sanctions and offer aid to compensate for the damage suffered. ill Atlas 0"! When you lie down the water runs out of the bottles. It is fairly complex and related to the pressure inside your circulation and how water is moved in and out of your circulation to bathe your individual cells. As the water in your legs shifts into your trunk, it increases the volume of blood returning to your heart. This triggers a "stretch" reflex in your heart that sends a signal to your brain to stop the formation of a hormone that nro- vents loss of water through your kidney. As a result, the kidney starts pouring out water. A person may lose five or six pounds of water in 24 hours. This also happens in the weightless state. Astronaut Ed White told me he tost nine pounds on one space flight but gained it all back the first day back on earth. When you stand up after bed rest and you don't have enough fluid in your tissues in your legs, you literally lose your normal compression of the veins in your legs from the tissue pressure. The veins expand, allowing blood to pool in your legs. So you have a tendency to faint. Sitting up, and a gradual return to the upright position, rehydrates the tissues in your legs and then you don't feel faint. That is why a patient is often gradually ambulated to normal upright activity. The influence of inactivity is discussed in more detail in The Health Letter Effects of Inactivity, Including Bed Rest, which I am sending you. Others who want this issue can send 75 cents with a long, stamped, envelope for it to me, in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Station, New York, NY 10019. DEAR DR. LAMB Enclosed is a label from StressAide vitamins. I would like your opinion about these. I am 65 years old and live alone. As I feel I do not eat properly, I take vitamins. I am in good health, although I take pills for high blood pressure. DEAR READER The Stress-Aid- e label you sent me shows that they contain far more vitamins than the recommended daily dietary allowance (RDA) from all sources food, drink and pills. I For example, they contain 12.5 times the daily amount of 2 that is recommended. I don't think they are going to hurt you but I don't think you need that much. You would do just as well with a vitamin tablet that provides the RDA. Do some comparative shopping and if you can get a cheaper daily vitamin preparation with the RDA amounts, you could use it instead. Incidentally, I agree that if you are not on a good balanced diet that you should supplementtyour. diet but you don't need to engage in vitamin overkill. DEAR DR. LAMB I am allergic to poison ivy and have had some serious Droblems as a result For the past 30 years I have been getting yearly injections to counteract this. My present doctor informs me that tests have shown that these injections are of no value and should be discontinued. I would appreciate your comment. DEAR READER Poison ivy is caused by the reaction to the oleoresins from the plant. Your doctor's comments represent current thinking that injections of extracts of poison ivy are not useful either in treatment or prevention. Too bad. The best approach is for sensitive people to avoid exposure. That is sometimes easier said than done. The oleoresins jean pass through thin clothing. The offending oleoresins can also be carried on the fur of pets or on clothing so you don't always have to have direct contact. The treatment is largely symptomatic to relieve the discomfort. The truth is there is no really 18, 1983 UTAH fOUTSIDF SLO J? f ,,. |
