A man who allowed his (UPI) $53,000 house in Seattle to be sold for back taxes rather than pay the $672 owed to the county assessor is about to lose his dwelling in Skagit County for the same reason. Ralph Gingerich, 47, of Sedro Woolley, won't say why he refuses to pay his taxes, allowing his home to be sold out from under him. The unemployed laborer owes $1,393.39 by Jan. 13 on the Sedro Woolley home. Skagit County records show the house and lot are assessed at $14,250. The records also show Gingerich hasn't paid his taxes since 1977, when the bill was $146.23. J He could have prevented foreclosure at any time since then if he had paid that amount plus $87 in interest by July 31, when all five years of back taxes fell due. The interest on the delinquent taxes now runs 1 percent a month. Gingerich said he hasn't contacted county officials because he felt it would do no good. He claimed Skagit County officials hadn't notified him about the foreclosure move. "I don't read junk mail," he said But County Treasurer Ruth Wylie said she sent a Skagit deputy to Gingerich's home to serve him with the foreclosure papers when her earlier attempts to reach him were unsuccessful.
