Show Monday. March 29. 1982. THE HERALD. Provo. mi Channel 11 Will Air Fa US Hawthorne Story on Monauy The acclaimed television adaptation of "The Scarlet Letter " Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic tale of adultery in Puritan Boston, will be rebroadcast Monday at 7 p.m. on Channel 11. "The Scarlet Letter" represents the first serial presentation of a classic American novel produced by public television, and stars Meg Foster as the adulterous Hester Prynne. Kevin Conway as her vengeful husband Roger Chillingworth. and John Heard as the pious minister Arthur Dimmesdale. Four years went into the research, planning and production of "The Scarlet Letter." which was written in 1850. The program situated in early Puritanical America, was shot on location in Newport. Rhode Island where the town of Boston (circa 1642) was reconstructed to evoke the Puritan atmosphere Hawthorne described in his most famous work. Set designer Eugene Lee created a Puritan community in the corner of the fort more than 20 structures ranging from thatched huts (made by the only professional thatcher in America) to the Governor's KUER g mansion (a gaudy facade studded with stained glass, just as Hawthorne described it. ) Research into the period of the earliest American settlers has uncovered new historical insights, in striking variance with our stereotypical impressions of individual and community life 300 years ago. Far from being dour and dark. Puritan Bostonians in the 1640s were true children of the Elizabethans, and their lives in many ways were as vibrant and X 5, i colorful. The cast numbered 28 speaking roles and upwards of 100 extras. These extras were not only assigned actual roles as members of the community a jointer, a miller a fishmonger but each cast member wore a tailor-mad- e costume designed by Franne Lee. The cumulative effect of this attention to detail is dearly evident in the production, creating a striking impression of America in its infancy. Long considered one of the most touching and tragic of America's novels "The Scarlet Letter." more than 100 years later, is still contemporary, and Iff- 'V . a i 1 - - I k ss I I j I I rx i f 4 MM! 1 1 Successor to Harlow? its concerns timeless. nn Warren stars as the dim girlfriend of Kin ( lames Garner) in MfiM's nrosontntion of Blake Edwards'' "Victor 'Victoria' a romantic f.r-slp- v fomerJv of mistaken identity set in Pairs in the ISM's.
