Show Monday. February Tefl Ale Why HEATHCLIFF I0IN THE V w Sea Chalk Forms Bv ARKU)Y LF.OKIM the surface of the ocean there live many forms of very tiny plants and d animals. Among these are animals called "Foraminifnra " which have shells of lime. When these animals die their tiny shells sink to the ocean floor, and in time they form a thick layer there. This layer becomes cemented and compressed into a soft limestone called "chalk." Men have used this soft limestone for hundreds of years, and one of these uses has been to make crayon. In fact, one form of this chalk called "red earth," has been used to make crayons since ancient times. Today many crayons are made from artificially prepared mixtures. This consists of a base of certain types of clay, to which a variety of pigments are added. This material is then "cemented" together by the use of an adhesive. By adding various amounts of coloring to a given quantity of the base any shade of color can be obtained. You may think that only children use crayons. But chalk and crayons have had an important role in the history of one-calle- 1 THE FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLEBEE".'
