Show Friday. October Reutemann Seeks World Championship LAS VEGAS. Nev. (L'PIi Pari Reutemann is eyeing the world championship of racing drivers and worrying about his neck. He's not complaining about risking it. at mph. He's more concerned with straining it from the constant fighter-pilo- t swivel needed to cope with the twisty new race track stuffed into 75 acres of desert on the edge of Las Vegas. That's where the last race of the season will decide the formula one championship Saturday afternoon, and for the first time in eight years, three drivers have a shot at the title in a climactic showdown. Reutemann, of Argentina, the leader in the point standings, had the best time in qualification runs Thursday, giving him a tentative hold on the pole position. He averaged 104.918 mph in his Leyland around the circuit, which has 14 sharp turns and is the subject of some debate over whether it is a proper layout for the world's most wheel-to-whe- 100-pl- 2.2-mi- prestigious racing circuit. "The only problem with the track has been sand blowing over certain por tions," said Reutemann. "Everything else is going very well." The track was built behind Caesars Palace hotel and casino which is sponsoring the race. "The race will be very physical for the driver," he said. "My neck especially has been getting sore because of some parts of the track. The race itself will be like Las Vegas and the roulette wheel." Reutemann was just slightly faster than Australian Alan Jones, last year's champ, who averaged 104.361 mph. Reutemann and Jones are the drivers for the Williams team, which has already cinched the manufacturers championship. Two others topped the 104 mark, Alain Prost of France at 104.099. and Gilles Villeneuve of Canada at 104.067. The 24 fastest of the 30 entrants qualify for the race Saturday. Qualifying continues today. Brazil's Nelson Piquet, who trails Reutemann by one point in the championship standings, was fifth fastest Thursday, at 103.412. The third driver with a chance at the crown, Jacque Laffite of France, who trails by six points, was 10th with 102.2. The ton American in the mostly foreign lisid. Mario Andretti. was seventh at 102.581. The final race of the Can-Aseason was scheduled to be held on the same track late this afternoon. Australia's Geoff Brabham, son of three-tim- e formula one champion Sir Jack Brabham, was the leader in points for the championship with two others close enough to challenge him, Al Holbert of Warrington Pa. and Italian Teo Fabi, of actor Paul Newman's team. Brabham had the second place in the front row, alongside Danny pole-winn- ing Thursday were Nigel Mansell. England, 103.294; Andrea de Cesaris. Italy, 102.912; and Patrick Tarnday, France, 102.221. Five and putts netted birdies on the fifth and sixth holes. On No. 7. Watson got his only bogey of the day when an iron approach shot strayed and he missed a chip for par. Two more birdies came on 8 and 11. followed by the eagle at 15. Then Watson finished the day with a putt for a birdie on 18. Gilbert the early leader most of the day with his 65, complained of the wind, which died down by the time Watson was touring the course. "Wind is a major hazard here." Watson agreed, "but for me. it was an easy day to play golf." Another reason Watson chose to add Pensacola to his schedule is the chance to overtake Tom Kite as the year's leading money-winneRaymond Floyd and Bruce Lietzke also are in the running for that honor and the winner's purse of $36,000 might do the job. That put him one shot ahead of Gibby Gilbert going into today's second round Two shots back of the leader in this final PGA tour event of 1981 were Jerry Pate. Fuzzy Zoeller and Scott Hoch. Watson reported he had been having trouble with his iron shots. "I considered not playing here, but I practiced hard for the last two weeks," he said. "I made a slight change in my swing and it has helped a little. "I feel comfortable with my putting and driving, but uncomfortable with my irons " Watson said. His putting was something to see. Calif., Monaco. Spain, Montreal and Brazil surprising observers who predicted the track would be too restricted to accommodate formula one racers. "It's running faster than we thought. Our car is fairly well suited for the race," said Andretti, who drives for Alfa Romeo. "We are having a little problem with tires, but that will be solved before Saturday," Some drivers expressed concern about the height of the cement walls which border the race track, saying they create a "tunneling" effect from the cockpit of the low slung rackers on the flat, featureless course, and prevent drivers from seeing around the many curves. Andretti said that if the walls were half as high. "It would be a lot safer for us." "It will have to be corrected in future races but it's not that big a problem." Chilean Eliseo Salazar agreed. He said the walls "make it a bit blind for the drivers and make it difficult to pass Sullivan of Louisville. Ky. The Can-Arace begins at 7:15 p.m. EDT.
