Show Page 12 -- THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Wednesday. October 20, 1976 crowd re mcmati the cheers, during the game it is not that much a factor. But before the e warm up, the game, in band can prove very beneficial at least 1 know it has for me when I have come out of the locker room to warm up. I know for me dressing in the locker room before the game is a very intense and quiet time. When 1 come out for my warm up and the band is playing, it relaxes some of the tension and gets me to mcve to the excitement. This is especially true when you are playing at another school. A big plus factor for us at San Diego was that the band was constantly doing something. When you're in a 50,000 seat stadium and 49.000 people are hostile, this can be very important. A friend of mine who goes to San Diego State said that the Cougar Band made it sound like San Diego's stadium was our home stadium and By BRIAN PILLICK have always wonuered if crowd reaction and participation has had any real influence on an athlete. My first react 'on is that it does, but not in the way fans think. The antics and cheers generated by the cheerleaders and various clubs go relatively unnoticed by the athlete. There are just too .nany things going on during the course of a game to acknowledge anything but the task at hand. I ai.'i r.ot, however, saying that the excitement generated by the various pep groups is all for nothing. They establish an overall excitement that the athlete 'feels' but is not consciously aware of. One outside influence that I am personally very aware of is the Cougar Band. Music is a natural innovator of excitement. This type of "fan noise" can be very relaxing and yet moving for an athlete. Like I they were the visitors. for those of ycu who think the guys play football for the screaming fans look at facts. It takes approximately 20 hours cf practice time and meetings for a three-hou- r game on Saturday. This doesn't even count the hours and hours each day in the off season There are few screaming fans in the weight room or at practice. pre-gam- ' ew Jot flSfe WW m two-poi- BYU's fans are different from fans I have seen on other campuses. There tends to be very little excitement generated during the week, and they don't seem quite as intense overall. But once the game starts and the fans are aroused, they can scream with the best of them. We have a real chance left to take the league and go to the Fiesta Bowl, When the fans realize this, I think there will be a whole lot of screaming going on. 4-L- SUPER COACH ,PLA-YEON AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM IN THE 506 WHICH 24-2- 3 ONE? tory.
