January 15. 1981 Or em Citizens Win First Round With Radio Station By DAVE HEYLEN Herald Staff Reporter Orem residents won round one of a battle to move a radio station transmit ter neighbors say is creating health problems and interfering with their audio reception The station, KABE-FM- , was granted a conditional use permit by the city in 1977 and for the past year has battled local residents who claim they are exposed to radiation "18 hours a day " Residents moved one step closer to removing the transmitter, located at 50 B. 800 N., when the city council Tuesday approved 2 show cause public hearing in February. Station operator Morris Jones says the station will move the transmitter as soon as it receives an okay from the Federal Communications Commission has filed a rePresently KABE-Fquest with the FCC to rhangp a rl iss A license to a Class C license The change would allow the station to erect a transmitter tower in the mountains 18 miles west of Orem "The class C license entitles stations to greater power and a larger transmitter which we intend to place outside of Orem," Jones' attorney. Ralph Clemm, said. Jones says he doesn't argue with neighbors' statements that the station causes interference and plans to move as soon as possible. City Attorney Bryce McEun said he had contacted FCC officials in Washington, DC, who said the federal agency has approximately 100 applications to consider before KABE. The FCC spokesman, Mark Lipp, told McEun it would be two months before the agency could review the application Resident spokesman Don Beckett, who works for KBVU-Fsays he and his group doesn't want to hurt Jones or his station but are concerned about the radiation emitted by the station. "We are willing to tolerate the interference," Beckett said, "but there is a good deal of evidence that the transmitter is affecting our health We are " exposed to it 18 hours a day. on the council health the issue Selling will be tough, according to council D. officer Fasbender, in To avoid possible serious penalties for willful failure to report their address as prescribed by law, Fasbender suggests that all aleins report their address as soon as possible to ensure that they meet the January 31st deadline, charge of the Immigration and Naturalization Service for Utah, vised that the Alien Address Report Program for 1981 has been under way for almost two weeks. Fom the number of reports received in the past years during the first two weeks of the program, it appears that many aliens wait until the last minute to make their reports. ad- Jan.
