Reynolds Forum, Karen Lynn spoke of a misconception regarding work. "The urge to work, as pervasive as it is in our American culture, is not genetic in the human race. It is important to realize that the American idealization of work is a late development in the history of the world, and one that would seem rather peculiar to people of most other times and places." She noted that while the urgency of survival left no choice but to work, the Hebrews considered work a curse, a punishment to be endured with as much strength as possible They derived this attitude from the story of Adam and Eve when they were expelled from the Garden of Eden. The Lord told Adam, "In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground." "Even though this attitude arose thousands of years ago. it is still much like the attitude in modern Semitic households. Though many work hard, they do not look upon work as a joy," she said. Like the Hebrews, the early Club Notes Speak On Morals idealie against despair "Work just the activity of work without any judgments as to its was praiseworthy and results desirable " Medieval Christianity did not encourage work for financial gain and the Catholics carried this even further. "Catholics believe you can consecrate your work to the church." she said "You are blessed by doing without." Protestants were similar "God has ordained your state; do not seek to rise above it." they said Calvinists. who surfaced around 1550 (Becoming the foundation of Puritanism i. derived the idea that work was not as valuable for its own sake as it was for its results. "A good Calvinist." she said, "had to rise above his circumstances to new prosperity and achievement. To wish tor poverty was like wishing for bad health." While a Catholic denied himself material things, the Calvinist denied himself leisure and "It is this Calvinist attitude." she said, "that has become widespread and willingly accepted as the American Work ethic.
