LEOKUM tears as something that appears when we cry, or sometimes when we laugh very strongly. But actually tears serve an important function and are constantly being produced, even though we are not aware of it. Tears contian various valuable substances, and these have a salty taste. One of them is a substance that prevents the development of bacteria in the tear fluid itself. How are tears constantly being used by us? Our eyelids are folds of skin strengthened by certain tissues so they can be raised and lowered by means of muscles. They work like windshiled only they work on wipers on a car the eye. And they move automatically at intervals. There is a complicated tear apparatus in each eye. It consists of a tear gland, which is over the outer corner of the eye, ducts which carry the tears to the upper eyelid, and canals for the tears to be carried off from the front of the eye without running down over the face. Every time the eyelid moves, it exerts suction on the opening of the tear ducts and withdraws some fluid from the tear gland. This fluid irrigates the cornea of the eye and prevents it from drying out. So we can say that a person cries not only when he knows he's crying, but all day long, every time he blinks. If this didn't happen, the cornea would dry up and vision would be lost. Win four illustrated "Tell Me Why" books, with 1,500 questions answered.
