Show Orem Stops Aha By BOB 1UDS0N Herald Spcrts Writer Steve Eager dre e in a pair of runs and Gary Larsen scattered seven hits to lead Orem to a Region Two baseball victory oer Alta Thursday. Eager drove 'jome Matt Glauser, who had tripled, with a first inning double and chased home Paul Davis, who had singled, with a third inning single. Larsen, though not as sharp as usual, allowed just seven hits over seven innings while walking three and striking out nine. One of the keys to the Tiger victorv was the successful thwarting of a delayed double steal attempt by the Hawks in the first. With one out, Mike Stoedter tripled Todd Wartman followed with a walk. With Larsen pitching to Bart Thomas, Wartman broke for second drawing a throw from Eager, the Tiger catcher. Glauser gloved the throw and chased Wartman back toward first. About that time, Stoedter broke for home. Glauser then flipped the ball to first baseman Dave Morrow, who gunned it home in time for Eager to tag out Stoedter. Wartman was, of course, successful in his steal attempt. But the Tigers cut him down moments later when Eager caught him off the bag at third and gunned him down. "The way we handled that first and third situation had to be one of the keys," said Orem coach Dick Belliston. "Ironically, we spent about half an hour on that in practice yesterday. Then we see it in the first inning." Glauser scored Orem's first run when he tripled in the first and came home on Eager's double. The Tigers fell behind in the top of the third when the Hawks' Jeff Mounteer was safe on an error, Glen Walbeck singled and Wartman doubled to produce two runs. But Orem got those runs back in the bottom of the inning. Jeff McMuIlin 5-- 3 Beeh,veS,a" walked, stole second, moved to third on Davis' single, and scored on a ground out by Glauser. Davis stole second and came home on a single by Eager. Orem picked up a pair of runs on just one hit in the fourth. Larsen opened the inning with a single, moved to second and third on a pair of fielder's choices and scored on a passed ball. Roger Jackson, aboard on one of the fielder's choice plays, scored on another passed ball. Alta threatened briefly in the sixth as Wartman opened with a single, moved to second when Larsen threw away a pickoff attempt and scored on a wild Brad pitch. Thomas and pinch-hitte- r Jarvis also singled in the inning, but Larsen slammed the door on them by striking out Alan Walbeck and getting Mounteer to strike out. "I don't like to single people out since we played good team baseball," Belliston said, "but for Larsen to give up only three runs when he didn't have his good stuff .... Well. I'm pleased. "This is the best start we've had in the five years I've been here," Belliston said. "And a lot of it is because our defense has been really good." Portland center Tom Owens stressed his team can recover and prolong the series. "Seattle is a great team." Owens said. "The encouraging thing about going into Game 2 is that we know we can come back and make a game of it if we get behind." If the Sonics win tonight, they advance to the conference semifinals, taking on Milwaukee, the Central Division regular season champs who drew a bye in the first round of the playoffs. A Portland victory sets up a third game with the Sonics in Seattle last season. All but two of last year's players will be back, including guard Tony Grier, Sun Belt Conference sophomore of the year and leading scorer in the conference. The hiring of Rose was announced by Athletic Director Richard Bowers about the same time Purdue Athletic Director Dick King announced at West Lafayette, Ind., Rose had been released from the final two years of his contract with Purdue to accept the USF job. "I consider Lee one of the finest coaches in America and a true gentleman," Bowers said. "We are fortunate in having someone of this caliber to guide our future basketball destiny." "It is with reluctance that I have accepted Lee Rose's resignation as head basketball coach at Purdue," King said. "He has given us two great seasons of basketball and I maintain Lee Rose is one of the finest coaches in the college game today." "There are several reasons why I have decided to accept the head coaching position at South Florida the three most important of which are climate, the new Sun Belt Conference and relatives living in the Tampa area," Rose said.
