"Vith the signing of the new work contract by the three hold-out small eraft bargaining unions on January 29, more than 6,000 employees began be-gan pouring back to work at six operations of Kennecott Copper Corp. in Utah last Saturday. Their return to work marked formal end-zing end-zing of a strike that hod paralyzed copper production in Utah for I 73 days. Mrs. Mary E. FEBRUARY 12 Bingham High Miners' smashing 79 to 45 victory over Murray last Friday captured for them thiMr sixth league win and also gave thorn the honor of being the first team to qualify for n berth in the state class A basketball tournament. Elmer M. Chirrick, 67, of Bing-hrm Bing-hrm was found dead at his home February 9 of unknown but natural causes. The 40th birthday ann'versary of the Bingham Canyon Women's Civic Club was celebrated wilh a dinner and special program the evening of Feb. 10. 56 members anj guests attended. FEBRUARY 19 Bingham district Democrats and Republicans met Mcniiay n'fht in separate district mass meetings and elected delegates to the county and state party conventions and officers to serve their districts for the next two years. Announcement was made that last month eleven bun drivers of Bingham High School successfully finished a first aid course which is required b-' the state. This was accomplished ac-complished by the cooperation of Kennecott Copper Corp. safety department de-partment under direction of Ross Pino and John Dahlstrom. Kennecott Copper Corp. mailed notices to about 30 residents of Bingham Canyon homes owned by the firm notifying them to be out of dwellings by July 31. FEBRUARY 26 A general meeting of property owners of Bingham Canyon was held this week called by the Property Prop-erty Owners Committee for pur pose of reporting to them on two meetings held since the first of the year the committee has had with representatives of Kennecott Copper Cop-per Corp. in regard to the sale of the City of Bingham Canyon to the coprjer firm and the progress made. At the last meeting the committee was ask sd to come up with a aggregate aggre-gate total price which officials of Kennecott will consider for purchase purch-ase of the town. Questiona.re forms to be filled out and returned on which property owners were asked to give description of land and build ing and their total asking price were distributed to property owners own-ers at the meeting. George P. Koukourakis, 69, of Salt Lake City, former Bingham resident for many years, died Feb. 1 8 in a Salt Lake hospital of natural na-tural causes. MARCH 4 Six scholarships to institutions of hirjher learning will be awarded to' dependents of employees at Ken-necott's Ken-necott's Utah Copper Division again this year, it ,1s announced. , Clinton E. Poulsen, 63, of Cop-' pcrton, passed away February 26 in a Salt Lake hospital of a lingering linger-ing illness. Louis Kolman, 64, longtime Bingham Bing-ham Canyon resident, passed away n a Salt Lake rest home of natural causes February 28. Miss Carole Deanna Middleton of SMt Lake City and Donald Joseph Wright of Copperton were married February 24. FARCH 11 A B nyham High School coed, Miss Sally Gillam. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde W. Gillam of Lark, was named first place winner in the American Legion Zone 2 oratorical contest held recently at Olympus I liyh School. Contracts for construction of the new Hlcrest High School, 7300- 900 East, were awarded last Thursday Thurs-day by the Jordan School District Board of Education at Sandy, which accepted all deductible alternates of the base bid. Total coat of the school will be $4,336,552. MARCH 18 Fulfillment of a long awaited dream, a state basketball championship, champion-ship, was realized by the inspired M ners of Bingham High School last Saturday night when after successively succes-sively taking East, Jordan and Carbon, Car-bon, they defeated the Olympus High Titans in the state basketball finals 64-53 to capture the I960 Class A Basketball Championship and with it bring to Bingham H gh School its first basketball championship champ-ionship in its history. MARCH 25 Junior Class at Bingham H gh School held their annual promenade promen-ade March 1 8 at the Copperton gymnasium. Julia Menna of Bingham Bing-ham was elected queen and Johnny Johnson of Copperton the king. The theme was "Enthanted Sea." Mrs. Howard Hausknecht of Copperton Cop-perton was chosen by the Bingham Canyon Women's Civic Club as Bingham Mother of the Year for 1960, and was the club's candidate in the Central District Mother of the Year contest earlier this month. 121 pints of blood was collected when the bloodmobile of the American Amer-ican Red Cross lntermountain Regional Re-gional Blood Center was here Tuesday. APRIL 1 Announcement was made of two key organizational changes in Ken-necott's Ken-necott's Salt Lake office effective immediately. F. C. Green, general manager of Utah Copper Division since 1958, was named to post of assistant to the general manager Western Mining Divisions, and J. P. O'Keefe, division comptroller of the Utah operation since 1953, was named to succeed Mr. Green as general manager cf Utah Copper Division. James Donald Stoddard, 57, of Copperton passed away March 29 in a Salt Lake hospital of a lung disease. Lars W.lliam Nielsen. 60, of Mid vale who served as principal of Bingham High School from about 1916 to 1924, paused away New Year's day after a long illness. Mrs. Alina Backlund Bartell, 78, of Sandy, former Bingham resident for many years, died January 4 in a Salt Lake hospital of natural causes. A Solemn Novena will be held in Holy Rosary Church in Bingham Canyon from Jan. 18-26, with Father Fath-er Gordon Lester of the Redemp-toiist Redemp-toiist Missionary Fathers as director direc-tor of the Novena exercises, was announced. Mrs. Apolonia R'vera Alvarado, 90, of Lark, died January 8 at the home of a son, Silverio Hernandez, after a lingering illness. Reelected councilmen G. Lawrence Lawr-ence West, Peter Dimas and Francis J. Quinn were sworn into office by City Attorney T. Donald Creer at the first meeting of the new year of the Bingham City Council. JANUARY 22 Bingham Canyon listings in Dun and Bradstreet's Reference Book for January I960 remained the same as for the previous year, 28 establishments, estab-lishments, according to statistic released re-leased this week by the firm. James Francis Barkle, Jr., 41, former Bingham Canyon resident, I was killed January 16 near Frisco, Colo., in an automobile accident. Binghnm-Midvale Eagles Auxiliary Auxil-iary Aerie No. 659 held a social celebrating its 30th anniversary. Charter members and past presidents presi-dents were specially honored. JANUARY 29 The 171-day old Kennecott strike was virtually ended Thursday as three hold-out unions settled with the company and started ratification procedures for new contracts. U. S. Smelting Refining and Mining Min-ing Co. announced diversification into consulting mining and metallurgical metal-lurgical engineering and management manage-ment services for other firms. 82 juniors at Bingham High School w 11 take the National Merit Scholarship Test on March 8, it is announced. This is approximately 40 per cent of the junior class at Bingham and is an exceedingly high percentage according to Joel P. Jensen, principal. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde M. Hettrick announced the marriage of their daughter, Barbara Ann, to Jerry Wheatley on January 28 at Elko, Nevada. In the annual CYO basketball tourney held at Judge Memorial last v.-epk-end Bingham defeated St. Ambrose to capture the Junior Division Di-vision crown. Stevens, president, said this week. Employees of Utah Copper Division Di-vision submitted a total of 455 suggestions sug-gestions dur'ng observance of "Suggestion "Sug-gestion Week" according to R. APRIL 15 Jordan School District Board of Education approved a 180-day school calendar for 1960-61. District Dis-trict schools will start August 29 and the term will end May 25, 1961. William Clive Siddoway, 60, of Bingham passed away April 13 in a Salt Lake horpital after an illness. APRIL 22 Preparations for the Holy Rosary Parish Carnival to be held at the C'vic Center this weekend reached the final stage. Event will feature a variety of entertainment for young and old alike. Annual spring clean-up week in the City of Bingham Canyon was set for April 25th through 30th inclusive, Contribut'ons to the Cancer Crusade Cru-sade just conducted and completed in Bingham and Copperton, totaled $293.51. This year's six Utah high school graduates selected to receive $500 scholarships to any accredited institutions in-stitutions of higher learning in Utah as dependents of Kennecott Copper Corp. employees were announced an-nounced as follows: Floyd C. James and Fumihiko Watanabe, Bingham High; Joyce Elise Bedont, Jordan High; Helga Lorraine Jones, South High; James A. Starr, Olympus High, and Bob J. Taylor, Cyprus H gh. This is the sixth year such scholarships have been presented by Kennecott in a program to recognize recog-nize and give assistance to deserving deserv-ing high school graduates who are dependents of Kennecott employees in Utah. The six winners were selected se-lected from among applicants from 13 high schools throughout the state. APRIL 29 Navarre Adrian Millet, 39, of Kearns, father of seven children, was killed early Saturday morning, April 23, when he was caught under un-der the wheels of a railroad ore car. The accident occurred in the Copperton Assembly Yards near the inspectors shack. Dance classes at Bingham High School presented their annual dance concert May 2.
