Starting today, this is Small Business Week. So, what else is new? It's a natural tendency to ignore the comings and goings of "this week" and "that week" as they are set aside by promoters. But there is something significant about honoring small businesses. Practically from the time the first colonists stepped onto the beaches of the New World, several centuries ago, there has been a premium placed on individual initiative and innovation. Strong Entity The conviction that those attributes are desirable probably accounts for the fact that today small businesses make up more than 95 percent of the national business population. And that force, some 35 million strong, provides more than 40 percent of the business activities in our nation. Just what constitutes a small business depends on who you talk with. To the Small Business Administration, a small business could be a company that does a business of from $1 million to $5 million, and in some cases as much as $15 million, depending on the type of business and the specific industry. To those of us who consider half that amount as big business, those figures may seem overly generous. But such a definition provides a lot of room for a business to be "small" in. Most Like It What is probably more important is how do small businessmen like their lot in life? Deb Warner, owner and manager of Utah Office Supply, enjoys his role as a small businessman. He likes the idea of being his own boss, even though he has to work hard, perhaps harder than any of 18 employees who work in his two stores or outside, calling on other businesses. "You have to be a peculiar breed," he said, explaining: "You have to have a lot of nerve," and that not everyone is capable of handling the pressures of being in business for himself. Mr. Warner believes there will always be a place for small businesses in our society. "Small businesses are capable of giving customers that persona! touch which is something big business can't match." Similar Thoughts Not long ago Dean Williams, vice president of ZCMI, said the same thing when he addressed the Orem Gty Chamber of Com- merce. He said that no matter how hard the ZCMI people worked, they couldn't give the kind of service that independent operators could give. Furthermore, he sa'd that this was a great area for independent businessmen and he predicted such businesses would grow probably because ZCMI was nearby. The dream of many small businessmen is to y motivation of the grow. In fact, the small businessman is probably nourished by to make the desire to build something greater profits and have dominion over a greater empire no matter how small that empire was to begin with. day-to-da- All Small Once The SBA is quick to point out that while 95 percent of the businesses in America are small businesses, the remaining five percent once were small. They survived and succeeded. But that's a different story. There are those small businessmen who are afraid of growth. They don't want to gat any larger. They are satisfied wiih the business they have and the dominion over which they rule. Young Steve Sparhawk is such a businessman. He's young. He's only been in business a few years. But already feels he's got more than he can handle by himself. With a few more years behind him he might change his mind, but for now he's satisfied. His business is painting contracting and he has several men working for him. Since his product is actually a service , he has to rely on the work performed by his employees. Some Perform, Some ... "I worry about how well my men are doing," Mr. Sparhawk said. "Some of them I have to leave out there on their own. Some of them come through and do a beautiful job, while others don't do so well." In his short time as a small businessman, Mr. Sparhawk has found out what growth has meant and that eventually it comes down to finding the right personnel to do jobs mat cannot be done by the boss himself who has other things to do. Harold Jones, owner and general director of Jones Paint and Glass has had to cope with the same problem. Rely on Others "In a business as large as we are, you have to rely on other men," he said, pointing out that he was lucky to have two sons, Ken and Merlin Jones who took an early interest in the business and were willing to work hard. He felt that the key to successful performance whether it be on the part of the small businessman or the employee was liking what you do. "Money makes a difference, but in the end it's the satisfaction you get in your work that counts," he said. Mr. Jones is glad he grew up in an earlier generation so he could start out in business when he did. He began back in 193S with a partner whom he bought out in 1956. He was able to start out in those earliest days with a bankroll of $300. Plans Facility Today he is in the fL.al stages of planning a new warehouse and manufacturing facility in the Provo City Industrial Park. The new plant will be 120 feet by 200 feet and will principally house his glass warehouse and thermal window manufacturing department. Just one machine he will have to use in hL new operation will cost well over $1,000. The cost of that machine along with the cost of the new buslding, the hoists, and other pieces of equipment needed to open the new operation perhaps demonstrates the added pressures facing small businessmen today who are members of that "peculiar breed" Mr. Warner was talking about the ones who want to start out today. Smallest Unit And in spite of the increased obstacles facing the beginner, there are still those who file for licenses with various cities to operate home occupations the smallest unit of small business. Again motivation for such a small businessman could be a cuvam of building a vast empire, it could be to just extra income to pay, or it could be to merely have something extra to do. whatever that motivation Whatever it is however big you are whoever and If you're a small wherever you are businessman, or if you dream of one day operating your own business, The Dr'v Herald, on behalf of the people of Utah, Wasatch and Juab Counties salute you and say to you thanks for your goods and services.
