Combined estimates indicate the state fruit crop loss may reach 90 per cent or higher, with a total wipe-ou- t of some fruits in some areas. Gov. Calvin L. Rampton met Thursday in Salt Lake City with fruit growers, weather officials and agricultural leaders. He will decide soon whether to ask President Nixon counties to declare disaster areas so growers can get emergency loans. The average time it takes for a new discovery in space or in some other scientific area to be adapted to the production line is ridiculously long. This then is the thesis behind President Nixon's new drive for productivity spearheaded by programs designed to cut the time between discovery and use. But these plans, as recently unveiled by the White House with quite some fanfare, are a jumble of ideas that merely skim the surface. One reason for this pale broth is that there is so much squabbling within the government's scientific community that a forceful program of technological promotion is all but impossible. Each agency with a scientific function the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Commerce Department, the Pentagon, the National Science Foundation, is off and the Atomic Energy Commission running in different directions. The White House has a science applications group aimed at pulling all these strings together. But these Nixon aides are discovering how little influence the President of the United States has over his own scientists. The White House men are learning in fact that while Mr. Nixon may be very powerful in foreign affairs, he has very little clout in bringing the government's own scientists and technical men into a coor- dinated program. Part of the problem is prestige. Right now, Mr. Nixon wants applications that will beef up the technologically faltering areas of industry, government and the services. But prestige in science does not lie here it is in basic science, however unrelated to life. Thus, within NASA a group fights to hold down a program on the applications of satellites to earth problems agriculture, mapping, electric power, mineral exploration to get more money for esoteric programs in scientific which will win them s conferences. For coiutieca Orlitons like e. r Nowadays anybody who swears is set down as being coarse and vulgar. The young man who wants to succeed needs to take advantage of everything that might help him on. And swearing will be a black mark against him in any job he may have. And if he wants to associate with the right sort of girls he must keep his talk clean. Nobody wants a swearer in the office, nor in the workshop, nor on the train, nor in the hotel. The only place swearing fits is the saloon, this is also unnecessary. Swearing means weakness. You will notice forceful men, whose words carry weight, use simple, plain words. When you swear it shows your impotence. It is the petty refuge of the helpless. If you can help a thing, help it; if not, keep still; anyway don't swear. Swearing has bad kin, it goes with ignorance, brutality, cruelty, drunken-ness- , licentiousness, viciousness, and anger. And you can tell a habit by the company it keeps. Swearing that is sudden, impulsive exclamation is not bad compared with swearing that has become a vile habit. And when a man or woman gets the habit of sprinkling oaths through their speech constantly they ought to be tied out in the bam with the pigs. To abstain from swearing does not mean you are a sissy. It simpiy means you are decent. To show you are man)y, you don't have to have a dirty face, nor black finger nails, nor greasy clothes, nor tousled hair. You can be manly though clean. And you are not showing any manliness by filthy talk. Even if you want to hurt anybody's feelings, or insult anyone in the worst way, use plain English; it hurts much more than curses. Altogether, swearing is a useless, unclean, and offensive habit! QUIT IT!" Paul Harvey Can the Soap Opera Fare Bring Viewer a xBad Trip'? Orem Letters To The Editor Belief in Resurrection By REV. DAVID POLING "The fact of the resurrection is not extraordinary: It is in accord with what we believe to be the uniform law of life that death does not touch it. The witnesses to the resurrection of Christ were unprejudiced, unexpectant, incredulous, and their honesty h net doubted even by skeptical criticism." Charles Haddon Spurgeon Christians may have long and late discussions on almost every point in the Bible and on many issues of theology and doctrine. Yet a singleness of mind continues to form, century by century. One theme that carries the church is this: the Resurrection. The Easter message of Jesus Christ being raised from the dead is the central theme of the Gospel. It rides with St. Paul and St. Pter. It stood fast with the martyrs in Rome and the missionaries to faraway worlds. What's lacking is the translation into practical engineering terms. In numerous other instances, the adaption has already been made in another country. But we have not yet imported the concept here. Some will be quick to deny this. They will point to some highly efficient plants and to some exceptional industries. But the difference between the most efficient plants and factories is extraordinary. Ill be da-- ed if I know what prompted her call, but she explained that her problem was swearing. She said she used to be really "bad" until she read an article written by Dr. Crane on profanity. She claimed it really helped her and would I be interested in a copy. I said, "He-y- es. I've got some friends that use terrible language." So for their benefit, here's Dr. Crane's advice: "The trouble with profanity is not so much it is wicked, as that it is just plain dirty. It is not so much that you shock religious people as that you disgust decent people that object to it s Swearers are behind times. However, the method I used to get a dog should work for you in getting a horse. My method was simple. I kept bringing stray dogs home until one day my dad threw his hands sn the air and shouted, "Okay, okay ... you can keep this one. Just don't bring anymore of those mangy critters home again." So, Michele, go find a stray horse and keep bringing it home. Tell dad that it keeps following you. Here is what she wrote: "Dear Herald. I like to read your news. One day I looked in the wanted ads. And there was some horses for sell. And I asked my dad for one. But he doesnt care if I had one, and he doesn't want me to because it would be to hard to feed. I hope you know what I mean. What can I do to get one? Yet many have failed to see the bridge that does exist between the divisions the bridge of Easter and the message of Christ's resurrection. A leading proponent of the social gospel was Henry Sloan Coffin. As preacher and later president of Union Seminary in New York, he was in the front rank of the gospel end social action. Yet much of his writing and preaching were anchored in a resurection faith. In one of his last books, "Joy in Believing," the largest amount of material by far is devoted to a section called, "The Power of the Resurrection." Ten years before the outbreak of the Jesus people, Coffin wrote: "Tiie indisputable Easter fact, however you choose to explain it is that Jesus was a more potent factor in Jerusalem in the weeks and months after His death on Calvary than when He rode into the city amid crowds or sat with His disciples in the Upper Room ...
