"In every way possible," Luehring said, "We are trykg to make our bus and ferry service system attractive to the commuter. We are offering him a convenient alternative to his auto. We are encouraged, thus far, by the results." Since the Bridge District took over the commuter runs from Greyhound to cities north of San Francisco on Jan. 1 this Toddler year, vehicle traffic has declined noticeably, according to Luehring. There are approximately 1,000 fewer cars crossing the Golden Gate Bridge during the peak fciree hours of commuting in the morning and about 1,200 fewer cars are heading north out of the city in the evening. Without buses, an average of vehicles crossed the 17,600 bridge into the city between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. With the buses and ferry operating, this fell to a low of 16,013 vehicles in February. "We'd still like to see a decline of 300 vehicles to get down to the October, 1968 average of 15,700 in the peak commute period," Luehring said in an interview. "Then we have to take off 500 to 1,000 more vehicles to really see a significant improvement in the traffic flow." The new books provide significant savings for bus patrons. Greyhound used approximately 115 buses on commuter runs to Marin and Sonoma counties while the bridge operates 145 at peak hours. The buses seat 45 and "are the best we could buy" at $47,000 apiece, Luehring said. Each reclining seat has a headrest and plenty of room to stretch legs. These carry 1.2 million persons on our ferry," Luehring said, (against one million last year). "In the next two years, we shall add three more water-je- t propelled ferries to our fleet and construct a new ferry terminal at Larkspur (on the bay near San Quentin Prison)."
