Show Hi h of the year for the BYU Cougars, is also taking place this weekend. The first 36 boles of the 54 hole tournament were played today at the Riverside Country Club and the final 18 holes will be played Saturday morning. That golf tournament will bring some of the top intercollegiate golfers in the West to Frovo, and will provide golf fans with some top notch golf. The baseball highlight will have the Colorado State in three Cougars hosting games. One game was set this afternoon and is set for Saturday at the BYU a double-heade-r diamond. High school baseball is also reaching the stage of crucial games as Payson and Springville playoff for the Southern Division title Saturday at 1 : 30 p m. at the Spanish Fork By JOE WATTS Herald Sporti Editor and Sports activities this weekend are wide varied and the highlight of the agenda depends or individual taste. There's a top track meet, an excellait golf tournament, and take some key baseball games scheduled pur pick. The BYU Invitational involves the most participants as it will aUract over 2.C00 high school athletes to compete in track, tennis, and golf. The track meet takes place Saturday in the BYU Stadium with the tennis meet being held on several courts and the golfers are taking their divots today at the Golf Course. The Cougar Classic, the op heme golf meet Tlm-panog- diamond The BYU track team wont be at home, but will be plenty busy. Some of the top BYU performers are entered in the Mt. Sac tack meet in California. L. J. Silvester will also be competing there in the discus event along with the nation's top discus twiriers. Another event whi( .ill strike the fancy of many other sports minded people is the professional motocross race at Manning Cycle Park in Manning Canyon. Professional motorcyclists will be racing throughout the day Saturday and Sunday vying for prize money of $2,000. With all those activities scheduled it could be said that it's a busy weekend in Utah County. Top team competition is expected at the -- ighf Busy Slate BYU Invitational Track Meet. Track experts figure Skyline as a definite contender, but fens will be interested in watching the match between Region Four's two top powers, Orem and Spanish fork. individual championship The will also be of keen interest to track buffs. The Cougars will be favored to win their own Cougar Classic for the fifth straight year, but they will have tough competition from WAC foes Arizona State and New Mexico. Such brilliant golfers as BYU's Ray Leach and Joey Dills, Arizona State's Howard Twitty, and New Mexico's Greg Harmon are expected to battle for medalist honors, but in golf anyone can get hot and win the title. In baseball the Cougars will be favored over the Rams, but whether or net they can get a sweep is the question. The Cougars are 1 in division play while the Rams are in second place with a 2 mark. A sweep for the Cougars could almost put the division title in their hip pocket. 4-- The Schedule Track BYU Invitational, Saturday Tennis BYU Invitational, Saturday Golf Cougar Classic, Saturday morning, Riverside Country Club Motorcycle Racing AMA Professional Motocross, Manning Park. PRESTON GOMEZ another one from the Padres, Wednesday night also. Gomez' phone rang at home around 9 Thursday morning and the caller was Buzzie Bavasi, 5-- 1, the Padres' president and a e friend of Gomez. He told the manager he'd like to long-tim- see him in the office. When Gomez got there, Bavasi didn't take long to get to the point "Preston," he said, obviously unhappy with what he had to say, "There are three men I respect in this game. The late Charlie Dressen, Walt Alston and you. But I ha'e to make a change. I have to do this. I want to shake up this town." Bavasi spoke with emotion. There were tears in his eyes. Preston Gomez felt a heaviness, too. He felt it beneath the shock. "It Tore Me Up..." "It tore me up mside," says the Diego manager. "But I know inside it hurt Buzzie, too. He did what he felt he had to do. I thought he handled it very good. After all, I worked for him 14 years and he gave me the job in the first place. That's something I will ex-Sa- n always remember and thank him for. I enjoyed working with Buzzie. The news media all over the country were wonderful to me, and I wish to thank them also. Yes, I took this thing hard, but I'm not the first manager to be fired and I'm sure I won't be the last. All that's needed with the club now is a little more patience. The potential is there. Someone is gonna have a lotta fun with this club some day. I'm only sorry it won't be me." Preston Gomez received the news Thursday morning some hours before the Padres were to meet the Mets again. He is so well thought of that he had calls from two other clubs with job offers less than an hour after he was fired, but there was one more important thing he wanted to do. He wanted to stop by the ballpark and say goodbye to his players. He wanted to tell them he hoped they would put out for Don Zimmer, the new manager, the same way they did for him. Then Preston Gomez would walk out of the San Diego clubhouse the same way he always did whether he won or lost. 1 Head high and erect, |
