BVTKS OLD TIMERS Front Margaret Sullivan Woods, Jullp, Whitley County, Ky.t I am now 90 years young a-- d remem-ber my childhood years when there were ten of us children, equally divided, five boys and five girls working around a big wood Are. During school days when our evening chores were done and supper over, we each had a job to do till bed time. Th; girls picked cotton, carded It In rolls, or spun it Into thread. Our allot-ment was snough to weave a yard of material. The boys made shoe pegs from blocks of maple wood, as my father was a shoe-maker for us children rs ''ell -- i the community at large. One night he got up from his work, rubbing his eyes and nose with his handkerchief and started shaking hands with the family. My mother asked what was wrong and he said he was "starting around the world" and did not know when he could return. Ha was at the time starting to peg soles on a pair of shoes for our County Judge the shoes were about size 12. Quite often, my job was to hold a pine torch for a light for father to work by. My mother wove cloth for all our clothes, as well as suits for the boys. We only had one (as we called it) "Sunday Dress." In later years, the railroad came through this country and we got one calico dress a year. Until then I had never seen a gla3s jar all our food was dried then. The deep hole where you always managed to catch a "big one" is no more. It has been Ailed in with mud or sand and the waters are slowly beginning to cut a new channel. Familiar landmarks about the stream, rocks, fallen trees and brush piles, are no more. And what's more, even the fish seem to have disappeared. What happened to your favorite stream? There are a number of possibilities, but the most likely answer Is pollution. Manufactur-ing waste carelessly dumped into rivers and streams takes a high toll of fish population in many sections of our country. In addi-tion, carclefs land management practices allow tons of valuable top soil to be washed into sUssms by erosion. Fish need clean, clear water If they are to survive and prosper. They are able to reproduce more successfully and grow much fast-er in clear water. When mud or slit invades the stream not only does it affect the reproduction rate but as well it cuts down the avail-able food supply. Clean water eon-tai-thousands of microscopic or-ganism upon which the small fish feed but like the fish, these or-ganisms have difficulty growing or reproducing in muddy waters. Legislation, education and a de-sire on the part of industry to co-operate as much as possible has made chemical pollution of streams the exception rather than the rule. But, this type of accident-al stream poisoning will bring howls of protest from fishermen who will idly stand by and watch an equally deadly type of pollution form land erosion ruin their stream and kill off the fish just as thoroughly and methodically. |
