UTAH: croc Abort leu of Cow. n this hitherto relatively obscure point the Prairie Farmer makes some sensible suggestions which may be interesting and useful to our agricultural renders: How desirable it would be if there existed only one cause for this unlucky event, and especially so if we but knew what the cause was. this oceurteuee has lor its origin numerous causes, anion' which some are very olncuie, or at least have not been very satisfactorily demonstrated. Among the various causes of abortion in cows, as well as in other domestic animals, may be mentioned mechanical injuries, over- driving, undue excitement from various oauses, innutritions and badly prepared tood.staguant or im pure water, rusty and musty hay, and especially ergot, or so called Bpurred rye. The latter iB found developed in several grasses, among these the rye grass, the Hungarian crass, the meadow fescue criiss.hweet scented vernal grass, timothy grass. well as in the cereals, rye and corn This product of vegetable diaease, on account of its being usually met with in rye, has been given the name of spurred rye. It possesses the property ot exerting a special influence on thu womb, occasioning contraction of that organ, and con sequel expulsionof the lo tus, if taken in sufficient quantity. Occasionally abortion will assume an epidemic character, ntlecting whole herds, and even the herds on a largo extent of country. Much has been writ ten in elucidation of this variety of abor tion, but it doesro. seem to be very satisfactorily explained. In ascer taining the cause of continued oases of(alorlion occurring on a firm or in a locality much caution will be requisite. The nature of the food and water thould be carefully looked into, and if the cows are at grass the herbage should be searched for any deleterious or poisonous plants or poisonous product the development of ergot being especially favored during some peculiar eeasons. It is also understood that cows which are fed in the neighborhood of and in woods, and that live on coarse and rank pasture in autumn, are most liable to this complaint, and especial ly if they have aborted tefore. The smell proceeding from a cow that has aborted has been assigned as a cause for abortion in other cows by bring ing on either a slate a nausea or a kind of nervous excitement. This, however true in certain cases, is not an invariable rule, as it sometimes occurs in animals wholly apart from the rest ot tlie herd, but occurring simultaneously with other cases on the same farm. In order to prevent this evil or effectually stop progress where it already exits the cause or causes oi tne same must first be ascertained; for, so long as these remain in operation, no reme dy will be likely to succeed. If the cause lies in the lood an entire change of diet; or, if abortion occurs in the summer, when the animals their removal from are on that pasture or locality to different pasture and different soil, if possible, will often be a sufficient and only efiective remedy. A cow that once has aborted is apt to abort again during the period of her next gesta tion. I herefore, any irregularity in feeding and management should be carefully guarded against, and when stabled such a cow should be kept quietly in a stall for herself. A cow that has once aborted, may abort again, simply by standing near .by another cow that is calving. A cow that has once aborted should not be kept in too high condition while ia can again, avow watery u. laxative food: at the same time she should not be led exclusively on dry mut t or very bulky food, ascostivenes ... . r. i bo guarded against, it m iwj be proper to remove the aborting covf Ironi the rest of the herd, and to thoroughly disinfect ber stall. Th! feeding of hemp seed, a halt to a pint a day, during a month pre vions to, and a month after the time corresponding to ber advancement in gestation at her last aooruon, is supposed to have befn at some extent successful as a preveniauve oi reourring abortion. It is also regarded as a safeguard, or, at least, a precautionary measure against future abortion, to let the ow that has aborted grt over one year at least before she is bred again. pas-ture- - Have no Excuse. you ally-- lCjeuse for suffering: with Dyspepsia or Liver Complaint?
