Show TEMPERANCE. h( miction. jgJcii What shall we drink? is at once a and an old problem. Since alcohol does not assimilate with but on tb contrary deranges the system when freely partaken of, health advocates are compelled to "go back" even on ber, for everything that is fermented contains a certain percentage ol alcohol. The question then arises as to whether or not bread made from yeat should not be excluded; for though it is not a potable but sn edible eommodity, the yeast which supplies it with its chief gastronomic)! quality contains alcohol and thus comes under the bun. This brings us at once to the proposition whether it would not be a goxi idea to let reason prevail in everything. It is not actually necessary to gorge the system with alcohol because it is impossible to entirely exclude it, nor is it the part of wisdom to banish from the nourishments ami nutritions of life everything containing the objectionable substance. Why not be rational beings, and use everything in moderation? There are times in life w hen even a drink of undiluted alcohol would be beneficial for instance, when a person is bitten by a rattlesnake or stung by a centiof are, course, pede; these but they remote contingencies, do arise some times, and the stimuluut is the only positive antidote. And the cases in which that article in its moderate conditions of brandy, whisky, gin, fc, are of benefit to sutForing humanity are much more numerous. Why then taboo the fluid because, like other agencies of good, it is too often made the means of accomplishing harm? The article should not be denounced at all, but those who abuse it are de serving of unstinted denunciation. Tobacco has its uses; so have tea, cott'ee, and other mild stimulants. They have also their abuses, but those who use them supply the latter. A man can kill himself drinking water can drown himself in it, and make the invaluable fluid harm ful in a variety of way. Doe it,there' fore, follow that becausoof this, water should be excluded from use? It is not the part of those who have good judgment to unspr'.ngly denounce the means whereby persons make beasts of themselves, and temper thoir wrath to a wonderful degree when speaking of those who deserve all the censure. Let us use every thing in wisdom and as the occasion tuny require; then we shall not need prohibitory ordinances nor will the extreme ideas of teetotal fanatics find so secure a footing in public- affairs Let us make as is the case the most of our servants, only hav ing a care that our natural position as masters be not overthrown and ourselves become the slaves. new vify iimrniji:, (M'unJuys except!), PbISTIX JCSCTIOS by the- - An MX" ATON 1 (Im!orjHrtl.) nrt iuic il 4' .Mr., xtowa tmng irMrw? altv4jmRtMbiratiiis ' t the luitireap the Wia.r.
