Said Croly: "We boast of our bie trees, of our vast plains and prairies. our great chain ot lakes and our gigantic rivers; and the mining corporation that would appeal to the imagination, to our love of large operations, and which would give reasonable assurance of security and permanence in the way of dividends, would in time become the most pop ular stock to be sold by our exchanges. Such corporations would save us from the insecurity which attaches to all mines depending on a few hundred feet of lands." Some remarks were then made by G. B. Satteilee, president of the New iork Mining Exchange, and Mr. Caldeen,of the San Francisco Mining Exchange. Among the gentle men present not members of the club, were Judge Roswell, of Lead ville, Gen. lolten, who constructed he Panama railroad, Prot. A Washington correspondent writee: A new American industry, which is dependant upon the resident Chinese population is being very quietly developed in the United States, and is receiving attention and consideration from the treasury olh cials, because, it threatens to affect seriously the revenue received from duties uoon an important article of commerce, namely, opium. It is the opinion of a Treasury officer that nearly all of the onium prepared in the two factories at. Victoria, British Columbia, is smuggled into the Unit ed States overland, there being little or no demand lor it where it is prepared. Among the remedies pro posed to stop the loss of revenue from this source, are: first, that each box of prepared opium passing the custom house shall receive a custom stamp as in the case of cigars import ed: econd, that the duty on crude opium shall be increased to two or three dollars per pound; third, that an internal revenue tax shall be col lected on all opium manufactured the United States for smokers' use The Commissioner of Internal Reve nue is of the opinion that such tax could be collected without much trouble or great expense, and that it would add from $300,000 to $400, 000 a year to the revenue. The mat ter is under advisement by the Trea sury Department, and it is highly probable that Congress will be ap nlied to for legislation on the subject "th Jrtlo.. THE Sew Telegraph Co. We have good reason to believe that the President is heart and soul with his party in this contest, and that nearly or quite all of his cabinet stand with him. If any member of the Cabinet, or any person authorized in any way to speak for the ad ministration, or any Republican otiice holrler, arrays himselt in hostile atti tude, it must be distinctly under stood he does so on his own responsi bility, and at his own cost. This appointment was understood to mean that the committee appointed by the priests was to be completely ignored, and caused a bitter discussion, in which Father Callaghan, of the Cathedral, who was supposed to be at the bottom of this appointment, was denounced by the German priests especially.
