We consider that their suggestions are well timed. There never was a more convenient season than the present for the building of a track: the spirit of improvement has so far taken possession of our citizens that they are ready to take action, where they once could not have been induced to give any encouragement; there is even yet a large and level tract of unoccupied land lying on the northeast part of the bench, in the most convenient locality for a race-tracwhich probably could be secured with but little trouble; the prospective long season of good weather, offers special inducemeuts for immediate action. The advantages to be gained from the possession of a good race track are many arid obvious: our horse men could test accurately the qualities of their animals; there would be many opportunities to witness the speed and style of fast horses which are constantly being brought through the town on their way either east or west: there would also be one more place where our people could indulge in amusement. Let the leading men and those to be benefited by the project, join in forming an association with this object in view. We have no doubt but that they would be cor dially supported by all classes of people here. Prom the Bcieotite American Editor of the Scientific American: I wish to make known to the public a method of treatment for diphtheria, which has been uniformly successful, in the practice of the writer, during a number of years, which included two epidemics; and in a large number of cases, not a case has been lost since this treatment I feel confident that, was adopted. its the mortality may use, general by be reduced to one per cent or even less. I have heretofore delayed publishing the results in order to make sure that the treatment was really what it promised to be, and I now wish to use the columns of your journal, in order that the public gen erally may have the knowledge in their possession. An attack of diphtheria is usually ushered in with a high fever and headache, and, in children, with nausea and vomiting. There is great prostration. Upon the tonsils and surrounding parts are seen white, snow-tlakpatches. In malignant cases, the patches are often yellow or brownish, and a terrible odor is perceived. The remedy found successful by the writer is permanganate of potash, in conjunction (not combination! with the tincture of belladonna. The method of administration is as fol lows: From 2 to 3 grains (not more) of the permanganate are dissolved in from 2 to 4 ozs. of water in a goblet. Five drops of the officinal tincture of belladonna, or, better, from 10 to 20 drops of the 1st decimal homasopathic tincture of the same drug, are put into another goblet with an equal quantity (2 to 4 ozs.) of water. A teaspoonful is to be taken from each goblet alternately at intervals of a half or one hour. It is, perhaps, needless to say that separate spoons should be used, and the goblets kept covered. In twenty-fou- r hours, frequently, a favorable change will bo seen, but quite as often the disease seems to go on unchecked, save that the fever may seem a little more moderate; but I can assure my readers that, during the second day of the treatment most marked change will take place. The fever will entirely subside, the mind will brighten, the tongue begin to grow clean, and the deposit upon the fauces will peel off at their edges or gradually break away. The patient will be upon the highway to recovery, and a day or two more of the treatment will bring back the normal hue of health, and an In rare appetite to correspond. cases, however, when the constitution is bad (cachectic), a longer time, five, six, eeven days, may be requir-ee- ; but even here the treatment has not failed. The "selling out" mania has reached all the different branches of business. Saloon keepers advertise that they have $10,000 schooners of beer to be sold immediately; and the livery stable keepers announce that they are prepared to hire vehicles, and carry passengers to and from the depot, at much less than cost. Yesterday afternoon two young gentlemen were engaged in a very warm discussion, when one of them, wishing to appear erudite, attempted to repeat the famous line from Shelley, "You lie under a mistake." He succeeded in uttering the two first words, with all their original emphasis; but, as his companion was s lightning striker, the sentence is likely to remain forever unfinished. Officer Stop It.
