FROM LA PAZ Beginning Sunday evening and continuing for eight days, celebrating of Chaniikah, a minor Jewish festival of, the synagagues, sometimes called the' Feast of the Lights, will be observed in Ogden Jewish circles. The festival is in commemoration of the Maccabean revolt between th& years 168 and 165 before the Christian era. The revolt was occasioned by the decree of Antiochus Epiphanes, king of Syria, who attempted to unite all provinces of his domain as one nation and establish one language and one form of worship, which was antagonistic to the doctrines of the Jewish people. Insurrection against the Syrian king was instigated by Mattathias, a priest of Modin, who rallied his countrymen and defied the decree of Epiphanes. Sustained by his son Judah, called tho Maccabee, and his brothers, the armies of the Syrian were defeated. The victory of the Maccabean armies happened, according toh the Hebrew of Kis-lecalendar, on the twenty-fiftwhich corresponds to the month of December in the year, 165 before the Christian era. Many legends have been preserved literature concerning Chanukah, among which is the martyrdom of Hannah and her seven sons, who were put to death because of their refusal to submit to the ceremonies oi pagan worship. "With this historical event,' the festival which begins next Sunday evening Is identified. y, I Samuel Abbott Maginnis, former Ogden man, retired minister to Bolivia, who arrived in New York yeswith his wife and two chilterday dren and his sister, Miss Daisy Maginnis, will go to Kentucky from New York to spend the holidays with his wifes family, according to a telegram received this morning in Ogden Dv his brother, T. J. Maginis. Miss Maginnis has left New York for and .will arrive here Christmas Oden day,-thwire stated. After returning from Kentucky, Mr. Maginnis will go to Washington. What his plans for the future will be are at present unknown. Mr. Maginnis was appointed minister to Bolivia by President Wilson and during the time he has filled his post at La Paz he has rendered valuable aid 4.o the government .
