(By a Staff Correspondent of The; Associated Press.) Constant requisi-tion- s of grain by the red army and as the lack other authorities, as wellcause of thu of rainfall, was a chief of Russia, great famine in this section according to the peasant farmers. They say the soviet, itself, helped kill the goose that laid the golden eggs. The story of the famlneand its most intense" miseries cannot be' had in the cities. It is only in the little villages, and where the farm workers live where the famine had its origin that the truth, bare, bitter and crushing, can be ascertained. AUTUMNAL BEAUTY The story ' of the village of Novo Semikinoi, 16 miles from Samara, is typical of many the correspondent visited up and down the Volga. Ridrolling farming out across the rich, land, swept by cold winds from the east, but still beautiful in the golden autumn, the forests shot with deep, brown, the grass yet green and upon it herds of cattle and horses, with fields here and there patches of sowed .with spring rye ploughed and and wheat, one arrives at this village straggling for a half mile along the two sides of the main road. A heavy silence envolopes the village. Many of its onestoried; log cabin homes, each shut off from the other by high rail fences enclosing a quarter-acre plot for chickens, cows, wag-V2and barns, are shut, the windows WFarded and the doors locked. ENTERS PEASANT TOWN Midway in the village the correspondent stopped, knocked at the door of an .occupied home. The peasant said the village was composed of 250 houses, SO of which had been deserted by the owners going . elsewhere for food. Two years earlier the had worked each about 300 acres of land but now they farmed but three acres. Normally, the yield was 60 to 80 bushels of grain per each three acres, whereas this summer, the harvest had been but about 40 pounds. the harvest had been about last year four buAhels of grain to each three At that point, the peasant, a taut d man, thinned by lack of food, beganto get angry. The. red army of Samara, had last Dece.mber ordered the village to contribute about 5,800 bushels of grain, for which no The payment was .to be received.: village hadn't been able to supply all this requisition but offered part. So the red soldiers came' and took the amount of the requisition. SEIZED POTATOES; ROTTED The village was ' left' without seed it was promised from grain, though was also without food Samara, and for the winter.- To get bread. In December, the villagers began selling off their valuables and eating their cattle and sheep- As the winter deepened, the famine set in, and the poorer villagers began to boil up old skins and hides, from furs, even the soles of old boots and shoes. When last spring came. Samara failed to furnish much seed grain, ance the peasants sold more valuables to buy a little. One way or another they had 36 pounds of seed grain per three acres. Then came a dry spring and a dry summer, with a scant harvest. The. rain came after the harvest. The peasant, citing the. way of the soviet requisitions, said 52,000 pounds of potatoes had been taken and locked up in the basement of the churcr and had there spoiled. PUT IIOlE IN AMERICA The worst of it was, he said, that in the face of their starvation, the Samara soviet had just ordered the village to furnish three to six pounds of butter for each cow owned. Yet the only food for the cows was field ' grass no longer gave and most of them ' s. milk. The villagers were eating fruit, melons, pumpkins, and bread made from roots, nuts, and tree bark. They . had enough for two or three weeks longer. "A pound of bread cannot be had here no,, not for 1,000,000 rubles' they declared. The villagers were "suffering from stomach disorders, and asked tar castor oil, a medicine not to be had :ln Jhe .whole .district. They, admitted that food, not medicine, fws- - what they needed. "Our only hope Is th Americans," we njust die.' they said. "Otherwise. oo -- 3 A ' - 1 .'r, : LOOK AFTER SHE LEAPS j - ROCKS BIG AS oo ... - : - .
