Show WORLD OUTDOOIIS SINK an old boat or drop an old car body in the ocean and you may be helping the fishing situation. situa-tion. Sounds odd, but it isn't, according ac-cording to the California Department Depart-ment of Game and Fish. " Marine Biologist John 0. Carlisle, Car-lisle, , Jr., notes that there are underwater "deserts" along California's Cali-fornia's southern coast flat, sandy or mud bottoms where little visible visi-ble marine life exists. Along other sections, notably Southern California's rocky shores, underwater kelp forests sometimes exceed 100 feet in height. Here, where there is ample food and convenient con-venient shelter, there are fish in numberless variety. California biologists are considering consid-ering the possibilities of transforming trans-forming the underwater "deserts" into lush "gardens." They will seek the answer to such things as the effect of creating artificial undersea banks by sinking shipi and other large objects. Young kelp plants will be transplanted to these artificial banks and to other suitable barren areas in an effort to establish new beds which in turn will help to attract more fish. Divers and fishermen long ago discovered that plants and other marine life abounded in the area of wrecks, man-made breakwaters or other structures. Even in the seemingly boundless bound-less ocean, fish will gather and be attracted to particular areas which offer the essentials of food and shelter. " Diving biologists will work and study the California coast to see if they can transform some of the sparsely populated coastal waters into bright new fishing areas for the ocean angler. |
