Show AXOTIIfitt COXVICtlOX i jiigii uii:. Closely following the conviction of Tweed, the arrest of Iugcrsoll, Genet jnd other celebrities of the defunct "Tammany ring," for perverting the trust confided to them as rulers of the great city of New York, the announcement is made that Frank L. Taintor has been sentenced to serve eeven years in the penitentiary. The riminal was formerly cashier of the Atlantic National Hank of New York, was indicted and couvicted on fho charge of the embezzlement of $450,000, the property of that institution. The defence advanced in mitigation of the ofTeuce, that the 'accused in using the money of the lank in stock speculations, had acted with the knowledge and consent of the President and some ot the Directors of the Bank. The moral ncnse of the business community of New York has not yet become so Hunted that such acts as the crimi-ra- l committed, can be considered 'innocent or even priseworthy" as He was maintained by his friends. was an officer invested with a sacred fiduciary trust created under a law which docs not permit any person to make 6uch a use of the fuuds of the association whose interests he was Iwuud to guard with vigilance. Even if the President and many of the Directors were cognizant of his trans ections in converting a great part of the capital of the bank into illicit uses, yet the acts complained of were guilty in intent and clearly unlawful. Under the Statute, if the allegation that the officers of , the institution winked at his nefarious operations had it been sustained, his act would have rendered the association liable to a forfeiture of its charter. It was an unlawful dealing with the money of a corporation belonging to a class ef institution whose welfare is intimately connected with the public good, which are liable to be depeei-toric- a of public moneys and which winnot bo justly considered to be merely private pecuniary trusts. Under the new jury system which is now in full operation in New Tork, there is an evident determination to correct tho manifold abuses Trhich have so long exposed justice and law to the scorn and derision of the world. The application of stringent measures to arrest the career of erime and wrong, in a few more instance will exercise a potent influence in elevating tho moral and social tone of the country to a lofty standard. elections for examination, but the member who holds them retains his seat until the report of tho Committee is acted upon. Many months may elapse before any such action is taken, very often not before the second term. In the meantime tho sitting member is entitled to all the privileges of the House as the representative of his State or Territory. The same rule prevails in the Senate. Bags. The Mrs. Landt, Restaurant, kept by has reduced its price for regular boarders and transient gucsis by the day. The restaurant is well kept, neat, and its menu equal to the wants and taste of all who have partaken of the bounties which are furnished at the table. Mrs. Landt's expeiience and qualities as a housekeeper are too well known to need comment. See advt. Dklmokico ulation. An Appkal. A suggestion to the managers and all who have the direction of places of amusement in this city, is not inappropriate when the convenience of those who frequent them for eutertain-meor instruction is considered. The crowds of unruly boys who throng around the proscenium during a performance do not onjy disturb the audiences, but are extremely annoying to all who are offended by their rudeness and intolerable noise. The space in front of the stage is no place for them and they should not be permitted in its vicinity. It often happens that the music cannot be heard, and the constant noise that occurs between the acts and the interruptions during the performance make it, akin to martyrdom to occupy a scat anywhere in front of thest ige. For the benefit of the patrons of the places of amusement we beseech the managers to apply & proper remedy to the evil. Order should be enforced, whether, boys or men are guilty, whether in the parquette or in the gallery. Dcl-moni- Condensations.
