Many correspondents, apparently, are not aware of the importance of addressing their letters correctly, and hence the cause of numerous grievances. Home writers put on their letters the name of the town to whieh they exp;ct the letter to be sent, and leave out the count and the State; some put on the Stale and leave out the town and county, while others again put on the county and leave out the town and Sttte ; and there are others who drop their letters into the post office a perfect lUink, without any postage stamp or any address whatever. Some people write on their letters, "If not delivered in ten days, return to Ogden, Utah," but do not say who it is to be returned to. Now, the result of all tbia negligence is thv millions of letters, many of (hem valuable, annually are tent to the Dead Letter Office, and postmasters and railway postal clerks are blamed because these letters do not reach their intended destination. The postal regulations require that corres pondents shall write the address on their letters plainly, with tha name of the town, county and State or Territory If correspondents will do this, they will save their friends, poet office officials uwi themselves much trouble aud an noyance. Yours, truly, , . J. IlAtt, P. M. Emigrants Westward. Emigration from the East and West continues to be very cxtentdve. Wo learn from reliable sources that the crops all over the Pa cific coasr are blighted by the severe drou'h which prevails. There is little hope for the fruit in that region this sumuier, and vegetables have wilted be yond the chance of recovery. Tho majority of the emigrants coming from the cla.s of East are a substantial-lookin- g on who work are farmers seeking young the gulden shores of the Pacific, iu ex peotation of remunerative wages, but their disappointment will bo great when upon their arrival they fiud neither work nor pay. Times are dull, particu larly in California, business is stagnaut aud money is scarce. One of the Call j'ornia papers, as a parody upon the advice of Mr. Greeley, "(Jo West, young cial quibble,' and until the Supreme Court of the Uuited States gives an authoritative decision on this important question, the people of Utah must possess their souls in patience, and submit to as many outrages like O'Niel's release, as the Judges sent here by the Administration choose to perpetrate. man, go West, now says "Go Last, young man, go East." On the Suoot. Lust Saturday oven ing officer Joseph Parry arrested a man named Moore, at the depot, for firing a pistol at Mr. A. Landt. It appears that a dispute bad arisen concerning &5, which Moore had deposited with Mr L indt on a couple of tickets which the latter win to purchase for him. Moore did his own buying, although he had on traced Mr. Lxn.li's services, Hnd then demanded his deposit back. Mr, Landt refused to return it, when a fracas oc to-da- y. prevented. In that case Hon. John Wilson, of Iowa, will be the second choice of the President. He is ad mitted to be well qualified as a practitioner, but it must be said that he is unfit for the Bench. His record is that of a politician and a reent ers partisan. He would not be any more acceptable to his colleagues aud to the country than the New York Senator. The choice, it is believed. is between these two gentlemen. It is useless to hope that such men as Kvarts, Parker and others, who would be fit successors to Chase, will receive any consideration. Another Criminal Turned IiOose. Judge Boreman last Saturday ave his decision in rejrard to tho juris diction of the Probate Court. It ras elicited by the case of O'Neil, convicted of robbery with intent to kill, and sentenced to three years imprisonment, by the Probate Court of Tooele County. Judge IJoreman's opinion is the d same as that of the late Hawlcy, viz., that the Probate Courts have no criminal jurisdiction. This d subject will come up before the Supreme Court of the United States it is to be hoped imand a satisfactory decismediately ion arrived at. Tho Probate Courts derive their jurisdictim from the Territorial Statutes, framed iu accordance with the Organic Act, which says it shall be as "limited by law." The same Act says, in the same connection, that the Pistrict Courts shall bo held "at such time and place as may be prescribed by law."
