FA Fred Kotter BURNING FEET Fiery sensation in your soles? Feet locked inside socks and shoes can start to burn. It could be a dermatological condition such as fungus infection, or calluses due to occlusion of sweat ducts. Feet which "breathe" properly should not burn. Your podiatrist determines the cause, which could be structural or functional foot defects combined with various abuses. Tests determine allergy to fabrics, dyes, medicalotions, tions, nail polish, powders, sprays, etc. If swelling or peeling accom panies the burning, prompt treatment is a must. Once your podiatrist identifies the offending cause, a program for avoidance is outlines. An accurate diagnosis must be made. Improper can worsen the condition. Actually, the many different tastes are tastes plus odor. There are four different tastes known that are distributed over the surface of the tongue. These organs of taste are known as the taste buds. There are also receptor cells on the tongue which carry sensations to the brain for interpretation. The tastes of sweet and salt are located at the front of the tongue, sour on the sides, and bitter at the back. Flavors are made up from combinations of all these tastes. It is said that an adult has almost 10,000 taste buds, and babies have many more. Maybe that's why they are such fussy eaters at times! The tongue helps us chew our food and swallow it. It is also necessary for speaking. Smell and taste are vital senses enhancing our world in the earthen vessel. Bill Armington, M.D., Consult. GARY WALKER, DVM Monday smells a human nose can recognize. Tiny molecules or particles from a rose, for instance, bounce off of it, and are inhaled into our noses by the breath we take. These particles then attach to an inner mucus lining of the nose, which is about the size of a postage stamp, and covered with specialized cells. These receptor cells, of which there are approximately 50 million, are connected to nerve fibers that run right into the brain. Cilia or tiny hairs found in this mucus lining, actually detect the fragrant smell and transmit an impulse to the brain by way of the cells. This impulse or electrical signal is interpreted by the brain and you smell the rose! Even these though receptor or olfactory cells are very sensitive to the slightest odor, they also tire easily, which explains why you will lose the smell of something after a short time. Our sense of smell is a link to our past. Certain smells and aromas back can bring memories of things, events, and people that are either pleasant or not. Almost all kinds of food eaten are also smelled. That is how close smell and taste are related.
