If you plan to use diet aid- s- "a little help from a friend" there are some potential dangers you should be aware of, warns David Spoerke, managing director of the utermountain Regional Poison Control Center at of Utah University Medical Center. Spoerke notes that both major types of diet aids can cause problems, although the second classification is more dangerous. Class one aids have "bulk formers" (materials that swell in the stomach, causing a full feeling), poorly absorbed sugars . and vitamins. In general, these diet aids are not harmful. The sugars may dull the appetite and the vitamins can replace those lost through im proper eating.' - Would you like :; resorting to diet aids The poison specialist' cautions that persons with high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes should avoid diet aids. "The only real danger with class one diet aids involves the ingestion of large amounts of vitamin A," says Mr Spoerke. "In a child, 250- - to units can cause skin rashes, headaches and vomiting." yourself better without glosses? "The diet pills also can be dangerous to children because of their attractive packaging and coloradds ful capsules," Spoerke. "It takes only three or four capsules to poison a child and diet pills all too often are left in a purse or in a kitchen cabinet." Class two diet aids are the appetite suppressants caffeine, containing phenylpropanolamine (a stimulant) and some of the ingredients of the class one aids. Spoerke says these products should be taken for only a short time because they generally are effective for less than a month. If diet aids are potentially dangerous, what should be done to shed those extra pounds? The Poison Control Center recommends an increase in activity regular exercise is the best route and a decrease in food intake.
