Also for the Hillcrest men, John AUsop won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of High school basketball 91-3- 5. tips off Friday evening If it seems to you that hardly any time has gone by since the end of football - and the start of basketball, it's probably because there hasn't. High school preseason basketball starts this Friday night, and while most of the area coaches are glad to get things dribbling, all would have liked more time to prepare. Brighton tips things off at home against Viewmont. Bingham and Jordan meet at Jordan, and Hillcrest will be at Olympus. Alta follows a week later at Skyline. All varsity contests will start at 7:30 p.m. following junior varsity games at 5:30p.m. A lot of people keep pointing their fingers at Hillcrest as one of the teams most likely to succeed this year, making mention of their overall height and front line experience. Husky headman, Jim Jimas, acknowledges that the Hillcrest inside people could average but adds the front line could and even also see some 2 players. No spots have been won on the team yet, but three players should definitely see a lot of action for Hillcrest. Center Marc Brown and forwards Bob DeMarco and Gene Player are back in the middle. The rest of the varsity line-u- p is still in the mill, but should be finalized sometime before Friday's opener. Taking the opportunity to point the finger at someone else, Jimas says the Orem should and Bingham challenge for the region title, while Alta returns four or five people from last year and Brighton should be young, but talented. is another Bingham team that should have good height inside led by returning center, Tom Roberts at But, for the rest of head the varsity line-u6-- 6-- 4 6-- 6-- coach, George Sluga wants to wait until final cuts have been made. Sluga says he has cut the varsity down to 18 and is now trying to get it down to 15. He admits some hird choices on the forward and guardlines may force him to carry as many as 16 or 17 varsity players. It could be that it will be after the opening game at Jordan before the coach has picked a varsity crew. to ' Sluga According around 170 young men showed up for tryouts on either the varsity, sophomore or' freshmen teams and about 50 to 60 people remain. He believes Bingham will be a versatile team, able to play with either a tall, power line-u- p or a short, fast one! . son. Brighton High lost eight seniors from last year's team and that has prompted Bengal coach, Donald Reid, to go immediately to and Saturday practices. Plus he's still expecting five to six potential players to show up from the football team. The coach feels it could be before Brighton's youthful players come into their own. He does believe this crew is willing to work hard and appears to be highly coachable. mid-seas- KHcrcstrst co:ch offcifcj nrcsllly cl:s$ Once more Hillcrest wrestling High School coach, Frank Iacobazzi. will sponsor a youth wrestling class. le kicks the Brighton season off Friday against Viewmont and beyond team captains Perry Par-do- e and Josh Burgun, a senior and a junior respectively, he's still unsure who'll be on the varsity.
