Big The underbrush hides most of what remains of the old mines and mills in Big Cottonwood canyon, but if you know what to look for, s you can spot the old and mining sites. Asa Bowthorpe, a longtime resident of the old Butlerville community, did just that during his retirement. He had worked in the mines in the canyon during his youth and spent his retirement collecting stories and slides of the area and its history. About three years after the pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley, the first sawmill had been completed and was in operation. Daniel Wells started the mill for Brigham Young. The site is located just below the upper power station in the rocky canyon. From that time until the turn of the century, about 18 sawmills were built in the canyon at one time or another. A few burned down and new mills were built on the same sites. The shingles that were used on the Salt Lake Tabernacle came from Big Cottonwood Canyon. About 900,000 shingles were milled for the structure at a mill at Cardiff Fork and at another mill just below Brighton. Some of the mills were d and the rest ran on steam. Eventually, however, the community discovered that the reason for the increase in the water coming down the canyon was that so many trees had been logged in the canyon that water normally soaked up by the large trees was running down the mountain.
