The U.S. Department of Agriculture also hoped that the parents of the youth would learn to improve their way of life by projects studied by their children. "If a farmer could see that his child's corn plot had a more productive or more disease resistant crop than his own fields, he was more likely to switch over and improve his farming practices than he was if the county agent told him he should," Dr Rose said. Today, projects range from the traditional agriculture, livestock, and home economics projects to bicycle safety, woodworking, photo One-on-on- competition involves boys and girls aged 9 to 14 in learning basketball skills, sportsmanship, first aid, 4-- grooming, and nutrition, Dr. Rose said. Totaling all the youth programs, Dr Rose estimated that there are about 18,000 young people involved in Salt Lake County Extension programs. 4-- Dan- ion. The Extension Service also works with some business men to get better service for the public, Dr Rose said. He explained that his office has worked with nurserymen to establish a certification program, and with pest control operators to help them better educate their employees about insects and rodents and how they can safely be controlled. A tape library with information about the home and garden is also accessible by telephone during office hours. The list of available tapes includes answers to commonly asked questions about lawns, house plants, fruit trees, parenting, food storage, and the Utah Occupational Safety and Health Act. A list of these tapes is available at the Extension office, Dr Rose said. The Extension Service is a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Funds are also received from state and county governments. Rules governing this class are quite specific We might say at this point that there are no rules regarding dress in Hunt Seat Pleasure or Jumping classes. In these, it is the horse that is being y primarily judged, particulari-lin the jumping classes. Therefore, one can see hunt coats a bit more colorful, and white breeches are popular with both sexes. Even so, gaudy, loud colors are not in good are used only in saddle seat classes. A hunt saddle is required. These come in many styles and range in price from a relatively inexpensive type, usually made in Argentina, Geri Babcock taste. Gloves are optional but recommended. Plain leather with a snug cuff are proper. If you know how to use them and they are necessary, whips and unroweled spurs are permitted. But, don't use them for decoration. Long hair should be done up neatly in a bun or braided in such a manner as to not obscure the number on the riders back. Of course, no jewelry. Braiding of the horse's mane and tail is optional. It might be well to learn how to do this. Certainly a horse neatly braided looks sharp, and it might make a nice impression on a judge. There is seldom a problem with Quarter Horses having a long flowing mane and tail, but hunter type horses do not look as though they are vying with their saddle seat cousins. In regard to tack, the rules specify a snaffle, Pelham, or Kimberwick bit, or a full bridle. A horse with a good mouth should do well with a snaffle. The other bits are a bit more severe and should be used only on the advice of a trainer or other experienced horseman. Bridles, to the quite expensive imported English and German saddles. Just as with a western saddle, the seat should fit the rider. As to which style is best, it is difficult to say. The choice of experienced riders varies widely. Stirrups, called "irons," come in different widths. A child's foot, or a girl's narrow foot, would be best with a narrow iron. Leather girths ( cinches) are easier to keep clean although web, linen, or cord girths are permitted. If there is a problem in keeping the saddle in place on the generally broader withered Quarter Horse, hunting breast plates ( breast collars) are permitted. Tie-down- s We've Moved !
