Show Fish & Game water development project for desert bighorn sheep near Wingate Mesa in San Juan County by the Utah Division of Fish and Game is in progress with up to 75 of the funds provided under a federal aid project. Rudy Drobnick and Rodney John, game biologists, along with regional personnel of the Division of Fish and Game are doing the development work in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management. Plans call for locating and developing 10 seeps where water now exists but is not available to bighorns in this A whirlpool Refrigerated Air Conditioning 4 III why fnr Mr Condition p-- By i ji I L g Jfe I I area. mow? Seeps are located by exploration, or by contact with people in this area who have observed seeps which can be developed in the bighorn sheep range. After the seeps are located, biologists must take their equipment in by jeep or by backpacking. Usually all that is required is to clean out the seep with minor developmental work to make this water available to the sheep during the normally dry summer months. By making water available, biologists hope to extend the range of desert bighorn sheep and allow use of some range on a year around basis where animals formerly had to leave during dry seasons due to lack of water. water These developments should also prove to be of value for mourning doves and other small game in the area. Studies will be made to de- termine the effectiveness of waier tins development work. Early observations have noted bighorn sheep already using seep areas developed under this project. Golden trout populations in the Atwood Basin of the high Uinta Mountains will soon increase as 20,000 golden trout eggs are now in the Whiterocks hatchery and are scheduled for planting in August. This will be the second annual plant of goldens in three lakes of Atwood Basin and if plans are completed a final, third plant will be made next year. Atwood, Allred, and Mt. Emmons lakes were treated with the chemical Rotenone in the fall of 1967 to remove overpopulations of greyling and were restocked with the first plant of goldens in the fall of 1968. will biologists Fishery make the long horseback trip into this basin this fall to check on the growth and survival of the first plant. Golden trout are well adapted to this high mountain type of lake and provide unique fishing experience for Utahns. These fish are expected to do well since the lakes stocked had no other fish life and the new goldens will have no competition while they become established. The three lakes in Atwill remain wood Basii closed to fishing this year and probably next year until biologists feel a natural population can be sustained under the expected fishing pressure. : - Model ELECTRICALLY ATM-P4- 9 SLEEP COOL TONIGHT! Fish plants intn the remote, iriaccessable lakes of Utah's high country are underway by Division of Fish and game pilots flying specially equipped aircraft for the plant by plane operation. Lakes inaccessable to fish trucks are being stocked by Fish and Game pilots using a Super Cub plane equipped with a four compartmented fish tank placed behind the pilot. Depending on the number of fish to be planted, the pilot can release any number of the compartments of fish in each lake as. he makes a slow pass over the water. Experience has taught the pilots when to release the fish and water for a nearly loss free fish plant. Small brook trout (it takes about 100 to weigh a pound) are the first fish being Stocked this summer. Pilots have complete stocking of 22 lakes on the Boulder Mountains and are working on stocking of 60 lakes in the Uinta Mountains. Following the plants of the brook trout, pilots and hatchery workers will be preparing for the plants of cutthroat trout into other lakes in Utah's high mountains. Peay said that the use of data processing has allowed the division to check closely the juveniles who purchase a hunting license without having passed the required hunter safety course. Violations of the angling rules brought citations to 50 persons and 40 others were cited for fishing without a license. Net fines for the 185 cases totaled $2,432. Courts in 21 of the state's 29 counties handled fish and game cases, the largest number, 48, in Salt Lake County followed by Weber 36. and Utah 18. Peay recommended to all parents that they enroll their youngsters in a hunter safety class soon if these boys or girls plan on hunt- ing this fall. Proclamations covering the fishing rules are avail- able from license agents and Fish and Game offices.
