The American election process was the focus of this year's America Day, held last week at Westvale elementary. In the past on this day speakers have been invited to present a spotlight on different aspects of Americana. Previous speakers have included Senator Jake Gam, who discussed the space program; Fred Roberts, sports in America, ' and Colonel Hess, the wars that America has been involved in. The teachers and administration this year decided, it would be the perfect time to have the students learn about the election process in our country, using a program sponsored by Brigham Young University and approved by the Jordan School District, titled Vote America. Each grade is involved in a different level of the election process in our country, learning the importance of voting and that each person then has a say in who leads them. ; Students are given the opportunity to ; vote for team captains and class leaders so that they will have a first "hand experience. ' The sixth grade discussed the constitution, and had a Vietnam Veteran come and speak to them about the importance of our American values, in association with the election process. Each grade was involved with a different aspect of the electoral process- that was geared to their own level of understanding. In the afternoon the entire student body led by principal Susan Westergard and the kindergarten students, participated in an American day parade. But to convince us that they're your best source for information they'd have to do some fast talking...rtd fast. In their 23 odd minutes on the air they deliver less than one-ha- lf page of the news you'll find in this newspaper, if that much. In their nightly shows, they'd be hard pressed to cover all the events that make this newspaper so unique. Picture Dan pushed to the limit to broadcast wedding announcements, birth announcements, anniversaries and obituaries. Imagine Tom brought to his knees by the challenge of covering every kid who wins a contest. Or fancy Peter gasping over columns of box scores or struggling with letters DEPEND ON to the editor. And then there are the classifieds.
