Aspirin is among the safest drugs available for arthritis treatment. But, to obtain the maximum benefit from its properties, many arthritis patients take aspirin in larger amounts, repeated doses, and on a daily basis even when there are no symptoms of arthritis. In such cases, it should be taken under a doctor's guidance. Although aspirin is frequently used in the treatment of arthritis this is no reason to believe either aspirin or arthritis should be thought of as minor. mm "There is a lot of misunderstanding about the role of aspirin in arthritis treatment which often stems from advertisements which promote aspirin 'for relief of the minor aches and pains of arthritis'," says Stacey Root of the Utah chapter. "Those who try to treat themselves and put off seeing a doctor may cause irreversible joint damage. A proper treatment program, including medication and exercise, developed between a patient and doctor can help control the disease and minimize joint damage, ' ' says Ms. Root. This activity will climax National Senior Centers Week and is part of the observance of Older American Month designated by the National Council on Aging. Ken Taylor of the Rainbow Bike shop has trained a group of seniors to handle the safety inspections. Lois Ray, president of the center's "Site" (governing) council is one of those who has learned how to check the vehicles for joint and junction alignments, wheel and spoke balance and brake and chain efficiency. Other inspectors will include Margie Hodge and Dorothy Dolson. Ruth Miner is finding this a new experience because she has never ridden a bike. She claims she "would need four training wheels in order to do so." Woody and Doris Carmichael have directed the crafts group at the center in making 300 flags of safety orange, yellow and blue which will be attached to ropes to divide the rodeo activities. Hospital charges, eyeglasses and prescription drugs are not paid through the program. A cataract is a clouding of the normally transparent lens of the eye, which blocks light from the retina and limits vision. Current surgical techniques are highly successful, with more than 90 percent of patients regaining useful vision. Not all cataracts need to come out, however, Often a cataract covers only a small part of the lens, and, if sight is not greatly impaired, there is no need to remove it. Cataracts are a part of the natural aging process of the protein component of the lens, and are common in people over age 65.
