Judge Memorial's young Bulldogs escaped Granite high's gym with a narrow victory Monday night. But it was the Bulldog play in defeat that turned a few heads. The win over Granite was by a slim three points, while the loss to Ben Lomond was just as close, 64-6- Granite fought back from early ; problems to actually take the lead, but elected to hold the ball for a last shot, a strategy which backfired on the Farmers. Still, there was much praise for the Farmers coming from both coaches. "Give Charlie (Whiting) a lot of credit, this is a team, but even more impressive is the attitude they play with, the excitement they have for the game." Whiting was pleased too, despite the loss "It was as well as we've played in over a year. We were a bit shakey in spots, but there were so many encouraging things." Not. however, the beginning. COTTONWOOD Brighton high basketball coach Duke Reid has been second guessing himself a lot lately and with good reason. Every time he looks at the schedule he set up, he has to wonder how he could've made it any tougher. The Bengals open tomorrow (Friday) at Skyline in a 3 p.m. contest. Then Brighton will host Bountiful on Dec. 13 and Cyprus on Dec. 19. e Brighton will wind up the slate at East on Jan. 3. The last three games will all start at 7: 30 p.m. "We know Skyline is loaded," commented Reid, "Bountiful is always tough, Cyprus has got a seven footer and a bunch of other good players and East looks to have i .' 6-- 6 6-- 6-- 5 6-- 2 64-6- lift. Beyond that, Sluga feels he has some good juniors and sophomores "that will add significantly to the program" as the season progresses. "I feel that the kids have made great progress," the coach added. "They're working hard and are blending well together." Following Friday's opener, the Miners will travel to West on Dec. 10 then host Granite on Dec. 20 in a 3:30 conp.m. game. The final test will match Bingham with Olympus in a Jan. 3 home game. League play is slated to tip off on Jan. 7 when American Fork pays a call. "Life in Region Two is 'life in the fast lane,'" stated Sluga. "The three Utah County schools look to be strong challengers, both Brighton and Hillcrest have some good talent on hand and Alta and West Jordan, I feel, have a lot of potential.
