The headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow will gallop through Plum Alley as Washington Irving's classic folktale comes to life on stage. day) The children 's classic will play until Nov. 2 Wednesdays through Saturdays nightly at 7:30 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturdays. An original adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow opens the Plum Alley season at Promised Valley Playhouse tonight (Thurs the hills of New York during the 1800s, the village of Sleepy Hollow was so quiet and peaceful some people even saidd the place was bewitched. Ichabod Nestled in if Crane, a lanky schoolmaster from Connecticut, scoffed at the villagers' talk of spirit and twilight superstitions. Then one dark and foggy night he heard the distant sound of pounding hooves and saw the apparition of an figure on horseback without a head - only it wasn't an . apparition "Hopefully we'll leave the audience wondering, 'Omigosh, what happended to Ichabod Crane?'," said director Marlene Brinkerhoff. "To this day, nobody really knows what happened to him. Some people think he's still living, some think he's gone and joined forces with the Headless Horseman . . . Nobody really knows - that's the mystery of . . -- $ 5 it "!t Hi X 5 Wt-V- Irving penned The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1818 and it remains so universally popular in the U.S. because it is a legitimate "American ghost story," says Brinkerhoff, who adapted the classic for Plum Alley's intimate stage. "You always hear of ghost stories and mysticism from other countries, rarely from the U.S.," she observed. "Then there's the whole nature of a 'headless horseman.' People see ghosts and witches, but who's ever seen a headless horseman? A lot of people whave grown up with the story, making it a tale just as much for adults as children." Brinkerhoff, who taught Community Acting School and Theatre (C.A.S.T.) classes for the Playhouse last summer, will use puppets - a pumpkin, vulture and ghost - to rate the haunting tale. She has cast Theron David Read as Ichabod Crane, a school-mastso tall and lanky he could be mistaken for a scarecrow escaped from a cornfield. Sherry Zeibig will play Katrina, the village lass Ichabod falls in love with, and Steven P. Newell will portray his rival in love, Brom Bones. The rest of the case is made up of: Christopher Borg, Michael Fox, Wendy Heaps, Nels Holmgren, Wen-d- i Longstroth, Jennifer Lundgren, Emily Parker, Terry Sharrer and Wendy Wood. The designers are: Doug Davis, set; Kevin Myhre, lighting; and Marlene Brinderhoff and Lucille Hobbs, costumes. Carolyn Richardson is the stage manager.
