One hundred teen fifth grade students valley elementary visited several states in the United States without ever leaving their school during a seven- at Mid- - social studies fair. Their parents and other students in the school were invited to visit the booths which the industrious fifth graders had made to tell the story of each state. Heather Ferguson and Emily Hebeker dressed as farmers and carried baskets of potatoes which represented Idaho.They made a special cover for their resport on the state and drew a picture of the state bird, state flag and state seal for the 1 ' I J 'J J M J- ; - 3 booth. Tomorrow (Friday) Eastmont middle school third term honor roll students will be treated to a banana split party at the school. Assistant principal Bill Evans explains that those students must have a CPA of 3.5 or better. Those students who qualify for the Most Improved Club will have a party on Tuesday. He says that the students who raised their overall grade average at least a half grade from the second to third term are eligible. Students will be bringing home mid-terprogress reports on Monday. They must be signed by parents and returned to the school. On May 9 the boys intramural track finals will be held. Mr. Evans adds that competition is no longer held between the middle schools. He told the history of Pennsylvania which played such an important role in the development of our country. He also told about Pennsylvania products. He showed a short filmstrip about Pennsylvania and then asked for questions. Carrie Green also did a booth about New York. She planned to have food typical of the state. She also did a poster of the state and a report which concentrated on telling about the climate, population and capitol. She has a pen pal from New York. Dressed western style, Jody Wright manned his booth and showed his report about Wyoming. He drew a picture of the state bird, the meadow lark. He told how many square miles Wyoming is and discussed the highest and lowest points in the state. Wendy Boatwright was interested in the state of Illinois. "Basically I concentrated on telling about the famous people who have come from there and about Chicago and how big it is," she said. She also told a couple of historical events which happened in Illinois and told about farming and the cornbelt. A cowgirl was the style Brittney Castrup selected as she told about Texas. Her booth sported a map and a sign made of wood that said Texas. She also told all about the facts she could find about Texas and about the famous people who live there. Jodi Lawson also is trying to get a pen pal in Vermont and she wrote to Troy Vermont elementary school to get information for her booth. She said, "I have never heard of Vermont until this year. It's a state people just don't talk about, I guess." The advisers, Cindy Barney, Carol DunField, Margaret Turner and Parry Draper, noted that many of the students learned about states they had not heard of before. The teachers felt that the states fair helped the students learn many things about the state which they featured in their booths. And students like Richard Stuart, Brandy Handley and Leslie Crowley also said they learned quite a bit about a lot of states. Barney, Carol Dunfield and Parry took part in the activity which also included prelude of music and song, OKLAHOMA'S OK. . .Parents visiting Midvalley elementary States Fair last Thursday get an earful on the state of Oklahoma from an enthuasistic fifth grader. The classes of Margaret Turner, Cindy SWING INTO SPRING FOR MOM U a Dustin Bernardy and Jason Wood constructed a booth about Indians. They dressed like Indians and had photographs of the state which were taken by Dustin's father. The boys also had pictures of the state bird, flower, flag and the famous race track. John Fontana did his booth on North Dakota. He was especially interested in the ski resorts and recreation centers and made a booklet listing all the facts he learned about the state. He made the state flag out of material and drew a big picture of the state flower. The highlight of Aimie Feveryear and Jodi Thompson's booth on Hawaii was a big banner with "Aloha." To cover the bottom of the table, they drew a picture of palm trees and a sunset. They dressed in hula outfits for the big day. The hardest thing about their presentation was that there were so many different islands. "We split up and each had four different islands to learn about. We made packets and shared a picture book and other things. It was fun," said the Thompson girl. Angie Brown has visited New York and she choose that state for her booth. First she wrote a report on the state and she purchased the state flower especially for her booth. She drew a picture of the state bird and hung up post cards which she collected during her visit to the state.
