District Court Judge Bruce e Jenkins weote a landmark decision last spring awarding $2.6 million to nine plaintiffs who claim1982 trial that the ed in a government should have warned them that fallout from the above-groun- d nuclear tests in Nevada in the 1950's and early Sixties could cause them to contract cancer. Those nine plaintiffs were among 24 test cases presented on behalf of the nearly 1,400 who claimed the nuclear tests caused them harm. Attorney Dale Haralson said several hundered of the complain-tant- s had cancers in the categories the judge ruled in favor of, and that eventual settlement amounts could reach hundereds of millions of dollars. The Energy Department was considering nine sites in six states for possible location of the nation's first storage facility for industrial and military nuclear waste. Two of the 489-pag- considered Scott sites were in Utah near National Park, and Gov. Matheson adamantly fought southeastern the notion of putting the facility in his state. Hut despite fears that Utah's Davis Canyon site - less than a mile -- from the border of Canyonlands -would top the Energy Department's list, it was not among the top three picked for further elaborate feasibility study. The three top picks were in Texas, Nevada and Washington. Davis Canyon was picked as an alternate. Bangerter Elected Another story of great significance to Utahns was the election of a Republican governor in the state for the first time in 20 years. When Matheson declared last February he would not seek a third term. Republicans began lining up, sensing a victory in what was already the most Republican state in the nation. It was, according to BYU Coach LaVell Edwards, "an unbelievable year," and the Cougars' top ranking was the first number one rating for a football team in the Western Athletic Conference. He stated that, all along, he wanted to do something for the center, talking over several ideas with his folks, Mr and Mrs Richard Passey of Millcreek. "We were going to do a farm," he said, "but, when we talked to the center, they suggested a doll house." As Dee envisioned it, the doll house had to be practical and sturdy as well as eye catching and fun. He designed a two story home with bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room plus a roof top sun deck. The frame and shell is constructed of solid wood and much of the furniture is made up of blocks of wood, shaped, sanded and painted. All of the rooms are carpeted or covered in linoleum. There are drapes on the windows, bedspreads on the beds and even pillow cases on the pillows. The attention to detail is remarkable. The whole shooting match is then mounted on wheels so it can easliy moved around or stored away. At 13 years of age, some people might say that Dee Passey is still just a kid himself. But, he certainly stood tall when the time came to select a public service project for his Eagle Scout award. One pageant official said Miss Wells was "almost too good to be true." The Brigham Young University coed is the second Utahn to wear the Miss American Another major story was the ending of an era at the University of Utah Medical Center. Artificial heart surgeon Dr. William DeVries, frustrated with the snail's pace approval process at the medical center, announced he was taking his program to the Humana Hospital in Louisville, Ken. While the Utah medical center was in the world spotlight in late 1982 and 1983 as the setting for the first permanent artificial heart implant in Barney Clark, it was the Kentucky hospital's turn this year with the second implant in William Schroeder. After the massive 1983 floods and Utah officials were mudslides, geared up and ready for the torrents expected to come from the mountains again in 1984. But aside from a mudslide here and a river jumping its banks there, very little major flooding occurred because of a gradual spring melt. Unlike the 1983 floods which were financially devastating but caused no injuries or loss of life, two deaths were caused by spring mudslides in Six students middle school received honors for their outstanding recipes and food preparation during the Holiday Food Fair held at the school last week.
