Show Thursday, January 5 THE GREEN SHEET Co 11111111111 Do You Wanna Get Rich emt Old P. T. Barnum right proud of me. Mayor Smith Speaks Citizen Input Is Important An item that I have taken great pride in is the consistent open door I have maintained through policy my three years as Sandy's mayor. I will meet with or talk by phone with anyone who desires to do so. Literally called me in the middle of the night to complain of safety problems that they claimed caused another accident. Had Mr. Lins contacted me first, I could have informed him that most of the intersections that he referenced are under state road jurisdiction and that we share his concern, to the extent that I have had several meetings with key people in the Utah Department of Transportation and have made specific requests to have left turn signals installed. In addition, Sandy has spent substantial time and resources to upgrade two of those intersections so that they meet the state's criteria for a complete signal. The reconstruction of both intersections will occur this spring and we will continue efforts to have the state upgrade the signals. The accident that we reported to me late at night occurred not because of safety problems with the road, but because a driver chose to attempt to pass a string of cars on a hun- dreds of people have come to me with problems or concerns and most have been quickly addressed and solved. Occasionally some Sandy citizens use means more innovative than a call or visit to my office to get a message to me. Last week there were two such occurances. Ron R. Lins, Sr., wrote a letter to the editor of the Sandy Sentinel accusing me and the Sandy City Council of having blinders on relating to left turn signals at several intersections in Sandy, and some citizens living near 20th East The Earthen Vessel hill with a curve at the top. Nonetheless, safety concerns are important to me and I have already taken action to add even more to the recent safety upgrades made by Sandy on 20th East. The most perplexing calls are the ones I don't get. Two years ago a Sandy parks employee made the decision not to fix the sprinkler system at Eastridge Park. The park was, therefore, not watered for over two weeks, until I discovered it. Had a call from concerned citizens brought the situation to my attention when the park began to burn up could have saved substantial cost and rehabilitation time on that park. That employee is, of course, no longer with the city. Citizen concerns, their problems, or their suggestions are very important to me. I want to receive them and I give my assurance that quick action will be taken where appropriate. I will continue to be open and available at all times. However, my preference is to be contact at my office during business hours. - correctly'' Salt Lake County can't even get it right on my automobile registration. This could be for real. For example, the lymph node located just beneath the tonsils can become swollen and tender if we contact strep throat. Another important function of the lymph system is to supply white blood cells needed by the body to defend itself against infection. That is why you may have an elevated or extremely high number of white blood cells found in the blood when you have an infection. White blood cells destroy the bacteria through various mechanisms which may include engulfing and digesting the bacteria (phagocytosis), or by producing special chemicals called antibodies. These antibodies attach to the bacteria and either directly destroy the bacteria or simply increase the likelihood that phagocytosis will occur. The lymphatic system works to keep us clean and healthy within the earthen vessel. where white tubes called lymphatics and returns to the heart via a different route. The specialized tubes forming the marvelous network of vessels in the sytem transport the lymphatic fluid. Located clear, water-lik- e along the lymphatics are found numerous valves which prevent the fluid from flowing backward. The lymphatic system depends on the movement of the muscles of the body which squeezes the lymph mechanism causes pressure to increase within the abdominal cavity causing the lymph fluid to flow upward. The lymphatics join two large veins near the collarbone where the lymph fluid goes back in to the blood Remember that about 80 percent of the blood is water? This water is squeezed out of the capillaries by the pressure of the blood being pumped by the heart. The fluid then circulates between the cells of the tissues, called the interstitial space, bringing them water, food and oxygen, and removing dead cells and foreign particles such a bacteria. Eventually, most of the fluid returns Your Oral Health stream. Located at various points along the lymph vessels are lymph nodes which are small glands or lymps of tissue averaging from pinhead size to kidney bean size. January The American Dental Assn. recommends that an examination be repeated every six months in persons with their natural dentition. The reasoning behind the exam is to treat beginning tooth decay and to check on the health of the oral tissues. Young people up to age 25 or 30 are very susceptible to tooth decay. Early detection of caries and early treatment help to preserve and maintain sound healthy teeth. Usually after age 30 tooth decay decreases and other oral tissues show signs of change. These changes are usually subject to oral cleanliness, oral habits (such a eating, drinking, smoking, etc.), placque and tartar build up, and other local or systemic factors.
