WEDNESDAY EVENING, NOV. Women and the. Violin Go Together, The claims of woman to the violin as an instrument peculiarly adapted to her are better recognized today than ever before. And this is all right for the advantages of .the violin to a pretty girl are obvious. If she sings she may lose her voice, and if she hasn't eot one, she can't sing. When she plays on the piano no one will cease talking, not even if she plays well, for too many play badly and she cannot be well seen at the piano. But when she stands up with a violin she is at once isolated. In our overcrowded female population isolation counts for much. To pick yourself out of the crowd, so to speak, to have the attention of the room and to have it all to yourself under the most advantageous, the most fascinating circumstances, that is a great point. And then the opportunities for display are not to be overlooked. Every motion of the well rounded arms is expressive, every attitude, if she plays really well and knows how to hold her instrument, must be graceful, displaying wrists, arms and shoulders to the best advantage. Expression, pathos, passion, sweetness, tenderness, vigor, aspiration, ecstasy, woe, all sweep over the countenance like swift cloud shadows that chase each other over sunlit fields on a summer day. Surely the violin was made for woman and woman for the violin. It is her grandest interpreter of feeling, the high altar on the empire of music, at which she stands as the embodiment of human sympathy and spiritual intuition. Utah's Fuel Supply Is a Great One. With a fuel famine staring the iublic in the face it is an interesting fact that Utah has coal enough to supply all the needs of America for a generation according to the statements of experts who have traveled the State's coal regions. These coal deposits, are said to extend in what is virtually an unbroken line from the eastern Utah border near Grand Junction, in a westerly and southerly direction for nearly 100 miles, down to the Arizona line. This coal crops right out of the cliffs in three veins, tLe lower and principal one of which varies from seven to thirty feet in thickness. The vein lies almost flat, dipping to the north about GO degrees. Ko far as prospected these immense coal deposits reveal the same high quality of product as characterizes the output of the Utah mines now being operated. An expert who is prominent in the mining world writes The Telegram: "Tho coal resources of Utah are simply inexhaustible. Xo one who has not been over the mountains from Grand Junction to St. George can form an idea of their immensity. Then.4 is coal enough there to last the West 500 years. You don't have to mine it. it sticks right out of the mountain and those .who live near the range simply take their wagons and load them up with coal, just as they might gather a load of stone." "The reason that the commercial coal mined -- ' "" '''IPat the pirate business is not what it ti5ed .j .be." ' Is it not?" "irnr from it. The chief symptoms of the malady are a pain around the sockets of the eyes and a physical condition so languid and lifeless that only the use of alcoholic stimulants restores the bodv to its normal habits." We do not agree with the Mail in its diagnosis of the malady as "brain fag." That term implies the presence of two things of a brain and its un due exertion. . The presence of a brain and its undue exertion would be an alarmingly strained assumption for tin "upper stratum of society, at least that portion which is represented by the eighteen-houbridge of monkey-dinnehostesses England and the players and hosts of America. Perhaps the pain which the Mail describes as "around the sockets of the eyes" extends backward into an empty cavity beyond the eyes. It may be that the very hollowness of this cavity is responsible for the aches. If so the disease cannot be brain fag, for there must be a brain to start on. r r in Tin: a. c. : i a. o lVfT) ' II. l:r:n !' h u I, !.". v C II. V'.!,-;1 ' r. ; n '' I n V T "J I I'd' ' I. V.
